If you were trout fishing on a river, and you only could only bring one streamer with you, what would it be?

My choice would be a bunny leach in either brown or pink

Great Post. If catching fish were the goal (which it usually is for me Very Happy

) .. And, I could only use 1 streamer, it would be an OLIVE CONEHEAD WOOLY BUGGER fished with 200 grain sinking line. This 1 streamer fly has produced more trout/salmon species for me than any other fly. This fly has worked during smelt runs, when fish are feeding on tiny dries, when nothing seems to be working, it has worked in lakes, ponds, river and streams. It has caught big fish and fish that could barely fit it in their mouth. So, if I had to go trout fishing anywhere in the world with just 1 streamer fly; it would be .. without a doubt .. the OLIVE CONEHEAD WOOLY BUGGER ... I kid you not, there have been times when fly fishing with my friends here in maine that we simply refuse to use it because it is just too productive. However, I think alot of it has to do with the way we fish it. It, without a doubt, fishes best with 200 grain sinking line and it has to be a conehead (not a beadhead), and the "Olive" color is on the darker side. Fisherboy (Austin) ties the flies for us when we fish, and though there are other patterns that come close .. Austin has perfected our "Olive Conehead Wooly Bugger" .... we call it the "Dura Bugger" because it is built witht he perfect colors, a very subtle strip of flash and a ton epoxy under the hood ... a serious work horse as alex likes to call it .. .

I LOVE the wolly bugger! a great fly indeed. I don't know what fish take that fly as.....i could be a minnow, a stonefly, a mayfly, a piece of trash coming down the river...WHATEVER! it catches a lot of fish. Infact, i was just talking to a friend about what the percentage is of how many fish in the archives on this site were caught on a wolly bugger. I bet it would be a big percentage. Jeremy once told me that a wolly bugger would catch every targetable game fish out there(but with different colors and sizes, such as white for tarpon, blue for steelhead, etc). I am now a true believer and would never doubt the power of the wolly bugger!

Black articulated conehead bunny fly.

I was tempted with the wooly bugger as it has caught me more fish but the big nasty bunny fly has caught me more BIG trout and i love my BIG trout Exclamation

Favorite streamer for me would definately be the olive bunny leach.
Like the bugger, its a good "all arounder" and easy to tie.

It is interesting to see how everyone has his own choice.

For me, the only two that never let me down are:

1. The yellow Mallard (but with no metal head, could find the photo of the metalhead only)

and

2. Marabou Muddler, black (see the photo)

while in slow-flowing waters I prefer to use the Conehead killer leach, usually the brown colour. Wolly Bugger is also god but not in all waters of Austria.

I heard of a streamer that worked very well in two very difficult waters here and if I'm not wrong, it is called Dog Nobbler but I have no pictures of it nor do I know how it looks like

If talking traditionals- the Col. Bates is a favorite. Mickey fins, orange muddlers, and olive buggers are must haves (though not necessarily in that order).

Hands down a Magog Smelt!! A close second is the Blue Smelt and bringing up the rear is the Black Ghost.

Black Ghost has caught me more landlocks and brookies than any other fly I use... I never leave home without it.

I just started the expensive art of fly tying were any preferences as far as the wing I like using white maribou but was wondering if there was any difference using feathers or maribou on that ghost.I haven't tried the olive woolie bugger but I am going to tie some.I have been having all my luck in the Ashuelot River on the black & red Wooly Bugger.I keep the weight on the fly forward on the hook.I think it helps a litttle on my roll cast.

For me, it would have to be a white bunny string leech for me with green or red eyes, a little bit of flash and red throat. Steelhead, char, salmon, trout...pretty much anything that likes to eat other fish.

Well i guess i'm going out on a limb here ,But a Montreal Sweetie/hoor would be my selection,most think this is just a fall fly ,but i like it due to a couple of things,has the red and white presentation which is an all-around attactor. Second kinda brings ya back to one of the lures you 1st used as a kid the ole faithful red/white daredevil, to me this best all around streamer in my collection,have caught all species of game fish on it with consistentency,and i even think its a better fly for brook trout tthan salmon!!!

yes i belive is true , the best of the best are the great woolly bugger and the olive with rubber legs, white RB, i thik one of my best catch on limay river are with that fly in 2 size hook 4 x long.
i believe the bedhead olive wolly bugger RB ar the best fly for fishing every were.

For me it would have to be a matuka sculpin. I have caught so much fish on this streamer. Notice how I say fish as in all types of trout, smallies, largemouth bass.

White Zonker with gold cone head. This fly has caught more smallmouth and trout than any other streamer in my box. I think the key is not to glue the rabbit. This lets the streamer flow like the wind!!! The Bugger is up there on my choice, but the zonker will never let you down

My favorite by far is a small weighted(lead under the body) woolly bugger,... cream body with dark brown hackle with mottled grey/brown turkey marabou tail, I have caught many different species(brookies,browns, bass, and even crappie this past spring) on this fly and it just kills the landlocks in the spring and especially fall, size 8 and 10 fished in short quick strips quartered downstream/crosstream.
Skip the bead heads in this color combo, they don't seem to work well, however the lead weighted ones have just the right action to wiggle that tail...drives the spawning salmon nuts... I had one charge 20 feet this spring at full speed and just pound the fly right at my feet...it was like a barracuda take!
Its my bastard version of the infamous "Crooked river hopper" wet fly, a true killer invented by local master salmon fisherman Chris Larsen.

The olive woolly would be second choice, took some nice fish on those flashy olives this spring,... good fly as well.

Mine would have to be the Cone Head Matuka, it's just one of my favorites for hitting the Boise River after the hatch, some how those rainbows torpedoe in on them.
