I am looking into purchasing a good 8-9 wt rod. Right now I am looking a St. Croix, G. Loomis, and LL Bean. The LL bean out fit is about $200 cheaper, but I do not know the quality of these rods. Does anyone know if these rods and reels are quality. I would like to make the purchase soon. I'll be honest and tell you that I used to work at the store and I still work for L.L.Bean, but I think our saltwater rods are quite nice. I fish Loomis, Sage and Bean rods and I think ours stack up nicely, especially when you factor in price. The Double L is a good rod for the price and has a moderate/fast action. The Orion is much faster and has quite a bit more lifting power in the butt section. If you like throwing 400 grain lines with big flies then the Orion would be a better choice. But it's like buying a car, if you live nearby go up to the store and test drive these rods before you buy. Compare them to the Sage and Loomis rods (I think we still have Loomis up there but they may be going away, they actually might be on sale). Find the rod that matches your casting style and you'll be happy. I can test the other rods, but I cannot test LL Bean. When you say that the Orion has some lift in the butt end, what exactly do you mean. Right now I have a moderate action trout rod from St. Croix, so I really don't know much about the saltwater rod feel. That's not to say that the Double L doesn't, just not as much. It would also be more handy if you're fishing from a boat and possibly pulling up fish from some depth. A saltwater rod is just going to feel beefier and more powerful. If you can cast a trout rod decently, you'll have no trouble with a saltwater rod. The teachers name is D. Gibson owner and operator of Great Bay rods. Great rods for salt and fresh water. Life time warranty check him out at wwwgreatbayrods.com just my two cents worth.
