Hi guys,
apart from Slovenia, Austria is considered to be one of the best places for fresh water flyfishing. Here are some hints, few really excellent rivers, mainly in Lower Austria
- Grosse Erlauf - Thormaeuer I +II
- Fischa Dagnitz
The best Salmonide Water SCHWARZA I +II+III+IV
- Mürz in Mitterdorf
Salza Gschoeder - the grayling paradise (80% of fishes are graylings)
and my favourite hotel with a lot of fishing waters, 136km waters and 8 lakes. It is located in the nicest area of Salzburg. Great fishing opportunities, mainly flyfishing possibilities but also spinfishing.

after a short break, I went fishing yesterday in one of the rare open salmonid waters in Austria, "The Muehleimer Ache". It was a long drive (almost three ours) from Vienna to Upper Austria, at the border line with Germany but at the end it was worth everything we went through:) till we reached the river. Unfortunately I had no camera with me since I thought it is going to be only a useless fishing trip after I've seen the photos of the river.
We left Vienna at 5:45AM and got there just before 9AM. Got the fishing cards, parked the car and went with my friend to the right part of the river. It really looked ugly, bad river banks, very quite water, and on top of everything - not cold enough and also very shallow. The surrounding area was also not nice so was looking in the water just to see a fish and start casting. we walked on the right bank of the river and honestly, for 300 meters I saw no fish, not even small ones. You could see through the water since it was very shallow. walking slowly around one of small pools where the depth was maybe 40-50cm, I noticed a monster showing his mouth on the surface and realized it is a barbel. changed the fly to olive wooly bugger size 10, the prefered one by barbel but did not succeed. just a bit below this pool, we saw around 50 barbels waiting for the fly. Tried 5-6 of my good barbel nymphs but they were not interested. My friend gave it a try with a dry fly but no interest whatsoever. Got really pissed off since I really did not like anything about this river and walked 500m downstream until I found another pool, maybe 20 square meters big and around 1m deep. Decided to fish with " Black Bead Hare's Ear" nymph and after 15 minutes, the first brown trout was caught (32cm big). I thought I should switch to Killer Leach and tried all the colors but nothing. 30 minutes later, I decided to fish with " Peeping Caddis" size 12, and withing 20 minutes I head three good brownies, 30cm, 33cm and 37cm. I also lost a big Barbel after 10 minutes fight on a fast water section of the pool. Started liking the water and went all to the end of fishing area, crossed the river and decided to fish on the left bank. it was already 1:00 PM and also much warmer. Went to the next and biggest pool of this river where fishing with streamer is allowed as well. Tried 5-6 streamers that worked always, tried around 20 different nymphs but not even a bait. I never experienced this in my life. My friend was fishing in the same pool but from the other side and hooked a 40cm rainbow fishing wth " Conehead Crystal Bugger, black " streamer, and that was it. just 5 minutes later, the water started moving and I could see something coming to the surface in every spot of the pool, and also in the water just below the pool. I wasn't sure if it is grayling, although from the beheaviour it looked like it. Fishes were collecting something from the surface but definitely not flies. The only thing you could see in the water was the fucking mosquitos which became active because of the nice weather these days. I decided to do something, take a dry fly that looks similar to a mosquite. The only one I found was "Adams Female" since I left most of dry flies home. This wouldn't be a miracle if we wouldn't be talking about Austria. In winter, you can forget about fishing with dry flies here. Ok, the Adams female, size 14, second casting and BANG, a 34cm grayling. and, without changing the fly, I got 7 more withing next 45 minutes. 8 graylings in one hour, I wouldn't think of it even if there would be million graylings in a pond. smallest was 28cm and the biggest 41cm. Stopped fishing around 3PM and went back home very happy:) First time in my life that I caught so many graylings:)

after the successful fishing day at Muehlheimer Ache of two weeks ago, yesterday I decided to pay another visit to this place. This time I went there with a friend, fully equiped (including photo camera). This river is really unbelivable. It is a small size river, with very few fast flowing sections and mainly shallow. Yesterday I managed to break my own record on number of Graylings caught in one day. Maybe to most of the guys from the American continent this means nothing, but in Europe, and mainly in Austria, Graylings are not easy to find, because of Cormorans and also the living conditions.
I caught 11 graylings yesterday (10 on a dry fly and one with small olive wolly bugger), 6 brownies, and one huge Barbel (I think it is called Barbel).
The weather was nice. We went there at 9AM and it was fogy and a bit cold. I started catching brownies one after another but also lost some good ones, including a monster rainbow. The fog disappeared around 10:30 and the sunshine covered the water. Graylings immediately came up trying to grab some small flies. I changed the fly immediately and for the rest of the day I was mainly fishing with dryflies. I only changed it back to Wolly Bugger once I reached the Barbel region where I managed to hook a capital one.

I decided yesterday to go to Wienerbruck Stausee, a small lake created by a river flowing into & through it. This place has always been a challenge. Giant trouts with a special attraction - lake trout, but at the same time extremely difficult to catch. However, yesterday was really a very different day. Although I caught the fishes with 2 flies only (out of 7-8 regular ones I tried), still it was interesting. Did not manage to hook any monster of 50cm and above, but the trouts between 38 to 45cm gave me really good fights.
The first rainbow I caught was after 2 minutes of fishing, hooked it with a version of Killer Leach Black (size .
I mainly had rainbows but a small lake trout and a good 38cm brown trout was caught as well.
yesterday decided to go back to the grayling paradise river of Muehlcheim Ache alomst at the border with Germany. It is the only river in Austria where you can fish with dry flies even in cold winter days. I went there yesterday with the hope to catch some good brown trouts and graylings. I decided to try first some of the new dry flies I bought and the result was couple of small graylings and one baby brown trout

after few hours I decided to switch to nymphs but unfortunately the result was 0. I tried every nymph I had, but fish was not active at all. I noticed a lot of huge Chubs swiming in the pools and barbels were also there but did not fish for them since the ban is from 1 May to 15 Jun. I decided then to try a black handmade nymp, an imitiation of a black bug and after 15 minutes not even a bait. I gave it a try also in one of my favourite pools there and when I was about to change it since it did not bring anything, all of the sudden I felt I have something. First seconds it looked that I got stucked in a stone or something but then the fight started. I noticed it was something really huge, but could not realize what. When it iame for a second to the surface and I saw the beautiful pinkish colour, I was sure it is a huge rainbow. It went down again and I started bring it slowly towards me. After 20 seconds, it came up again to the surface and I saw the huge tall fin and realized that I have to do with a huge grayling, the biggest I have ever even seen. Maybe I got too emotional, and maybe lack of experience, but I have no idea how I got the catcher in my hand trying to fit the fish on it. Brought the grayling 20cm close to my fet, maneged to touch it, gave him a chance for another last fight and ...
I lost such a huge grayling, it was all pink in the sides, I felt like crying and stop fishing:(
After a quick snack and a cold beer I took the fly rod again and went to the other part of the river looking for some big brownies. All what I saw on my way to the pools was grayling, chubs and barbel but decided to continue further down with the hope to find good brown trouts. Just before getting to the pool there was a still water area, shallow, and very interesting because of the big number of insects falling into the water on that part. Looking in the water, I saw a huge hungry rainbow collecting the flies from the surface. For sure it was over 60cm. I had change the leader before and had put a thin one and also had put a small dry fly. Tried it and the monster came after it but did not like it. Changed the fly and put an olive goldhead nymph and with the second cast I was successful, hooked the fish but also lost it after few seconds of fight, just cut the leader as it was too thin and I also by accident (while fixing the line) left the break on:(((
It was just a bad day, took the same fly and put it and searching the water for more monster. Not even 20 meters upstream I spotted another huge one. After 6-7 minutes of casting and almost touching the mouth of the fish with the fly, she took it. 10 minutes of good fight and here comes the 55cm (2.3kg) Rainbow

Hi guys
Great fish!
I will be visiting Kitzbuhel for 3 weeks and am trying to find good fly fishing rivers / dams in the location. I will not have a car so the spots cannot be too far out of main centres.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Do you know of any fishing / sport stores I could contact to find out?
most of the fishes you see in the pictures above are from the area not far from Kitzbuhel, but still without a car is not so easy to get there. Would you be staying in the city itself or in the surounding area. Please give me more details where exactly you will be staying, which period, etc and I will get back to you with detailed information.
By the way, PeterDK was with his friend Morten for a fishing trip in Austria, we managed to tie some flies together and had some good catches. For more info Peter should reply and attach some photos
ok, there are two waters next to Kitzbuhel (a small pond and a small river) which I would not recommend since they are not flyfishing waters and you rarely even see fish there. I would suggest that you go to Mittersill, 28km from Kitzbuhel and pay a visit to Hotel Braurup, www.braurup.at . There is a bus that goes to this place from Kitzbuhel couple of times a day and you might ask for itinerary at your hotel. Believe me, the waters from this hotel are the best waters of the whole area there
