Hi,

just wanted to share with you the beauty of the Slovenian fresh waters. I do not think that there are more beautiful and crystal clear rivers than the ones in Slovenia. I have decided to go fishing for marble trout in September, thus I'll be there in two weeks. Here is the link for those interested in any of the rivers there

Hi guys,

since I didn't manage to go to Slovenia last year, I had promised myself this year that under no circumstances I will miss the waters again:)
Ok, decided to go last week, took Friday off and after I had prepared all the stuff, left Vienna at 13:00. Got to Slovenia at 18:30 and had a full view of the most beautiful river called SOCA. Soca is well known for its blue colour and the marble trout. Decided to stay at Hotel Lucija in Most na Soci, close to the border with Italy. Since I had no idea where to go and where to fish, I had booked a guide through www.lustrik.com
I got the guide called Luka whom I will remember for a long time.
Friday evening I was enjoing the view and the dinner followed with couple of excellent Slovenian beer "Lasko" . Informed the guiding company that I am already there and we agreed to meet at 8 AM next day. The weather was nice, so I was 100% sure that I will fish in Soca. Went to bed a bit earlier than usual but woke up from the storm which started at around midnight. Rain showers followed by thunderstorm and lightening decreased the hope that I will be fishing in Soca. Moreover, the bad weather continued in the morning so after breakfast, with a very sad face I went out to meet my guide Luka. Thanks God there was no thunder and lightening which 1 hour earlier caused a powercut in the town. Luka knew that I want to fish in Soca but politely told me that he is afraid that it will not be possible. It was raining heavily for 7 hours, most of the waters went high and murky. We even checked one of Soca's tributaries and the water was getting dirty and high. However, he mentioned that we might be able to fish in Idrijca, a river which is known being very difficult to fish. A lot of deep water, spooky fishes and also very careful when choosing their food:(. Since I didn't want to miss one day, I accepted Luka's offer and after 30-35min drive we were at Idrija, a small place where part of Idrijca river flows. We got the licenses from a lodge there to fish the members area as well and soon after we were in the water. I saw Luka coming without his rod and asked him: "where is your rod?". He smiled and said, "well, I am guiding, I am not supposed to fish myself". I asked him to do me a favour and get his rod out as well and somehow I managed to convince him. We put dry flies on but the water was coming higher and higher and this meant "Bigger water, bigger flies". The water was also getting somehow greenish, so we put white streamers on and started fishing. After 10 min of fishing, I had the first fish, it was a Hybdrid trout (mixture of brown and marble trout)

just 10 min later and I had the second hybrid (photo will be posted later since it is in another camera).

Luka in his side also had couple of good fishes, hybrids, Marble trout and a huge rainbow

here are two photos of Luka with a marble trout and a hybrid

after one-two hours we had a nice lunch in a nice small restaurant which also serves as a fishing lodge. Went back to the water and luckily the rain had stopped. But, now the water from Idrijca's source was coming faster and high. With the high water we had to use fast sinking and heavy streamers. The water went up for at least 30cm. But, still it was very beautiful and we were able to fish. Soon after lunch I had my first fish of the afternoon, a nice brown trout caught on streamer

Unfortunately one hour later is started raining again so I was just expecting more water and more dirt to come but it did not happen. We had more fish caught late afternoon, mainly hybrids and browns but also a huge rainbow. Both, Luka and me lost two huge and excellent marble trouts as well

This is it from day one. I was very happy having Luka as a guide so I decided to have him next day as well. Guess what, I wanted to fish Idrijca again. The reputation this river had on difficulty of fishing convinced me in contrary. Or, better to say, with the right guide you're always in the right water:). Guys, I used guides many times but never had a better one.

Next day was shorter but we again caught nice fish, although the water leveled down and it was crystal clear. We caught fish on dry fly, nymphs and streamer. Soon the second part of the story supported with nice photos will follow.

I will go to Slovenia again next week and again book a guide from www.lustrik.com . Again, another hunt for marble trout.

It is incredible how the rivers look like, it is really amazing. You also find many international flyfishing passionates there. This time they were from Italy, France, Austria, US, Scandinavia etc.
Its worth visiting this place
