I amv starting my first year at D.A. next year as a sophomore and am ecxited and nervous yet sad to leave my stripers. I am, however, looking froward for some sick trout fishing that I have heard the Deerfield river has to offer. I would assume a typical 9' 5wt would fit the bill. I will be at school from september sixth until the beginning of june so i will probably fish from sept-october and again in may. I f any of you guys hunt around there too, i would love to get some info. I really want to bring my bow up but i dont know if the school would approve.....
thanks,
Pat

Hi Patrick.... sorry for the delay, it took me a while to get registered as a user. Anyway, the Deerfield is a great spot and I spend a lot of time out there an in the Berkshires. In addition to the Deerfield, the Westfield, Housatonic, Hoosic, and Green rivers all off nice fishing and varying degrees of difficulty.

You'll be all set with a standard 5 wt, I usually will use two, as I found that fish will feed on drys (floating line) and big streamers (sink tip) all within the same few minutes. You'll have to keep an eye on teh flows out there, as they are virtually unpredictable, and very erradic. It is one river that fishes very poorly when the flows are up. The literally stop rising or biting about 10 minutes before the flows rise, and it is tough to pound up fish during that time. Fortunately for you, that will likely be during the same time that you're in class... or atleast should be Wink

Shoot me a PM and I'll point you around... will you have a bike or a car out there?

No, dont have anything, just my feet. Thanks alot for all of that btw. Um i leave on saturday for school and will try to get out there ASAP. Do you know of any guides that would be willing to show me the river? Whats been working out there, anythin hatching? Ill be bringing up mostly streamers and a few nymphs and dries. I am very nervous and hope i can use the river to maintain my sanity.
Thanks alot,
patrick
p.s. are any of you bowhunters or waterfowlers in the area?

Streamers are a good idea... standard New England Nymphs (olive brassies have worked lately).... and black caddis dries....

Good luck, and have fun. THere are a lot of guides that do drift trips, just google it, because i have no recomendations, not sure about walk and wade, but I think that you'll do just fine exploring on your own.

Good luck and post some pics.
