Fly Fishing

I woke up and drove almost two hours to a stream. I arrived, marked out a nice hole with some large fish, put on my gear, strung my rod, attatched leader and tippet, looked down, no flies. I left three boxes of flies on the counter at home. Promise you've never heard language like what came out of my mouth. The closest fly shop was almost an hour and half away. I did what I had to do. Drove the hour and half. The worst part was spending the 40 bucks on flies when I have hundreds at my house. Anyone else done that?

i have wadered up and all that stuff .. been far from home and brought the bottom half of a 6 weight and the top half of a 9 weight .... obviously, they don't fit .... and i scratched my head for a while ... and didn't fish ... nothin' i could do .. that stunk.

That sucks...I have done the same thing that Jeremy did but luckily I had some tape with me and taped the two together. It wasn't pretty but it beat not fishing! I have also driven off with my flies on top of my truck! That sucked hardcore because I never found those flies. And one time (no not at bandcamp!) I forgot to zip up a vest pocket that had my flies in it and when I bent over they got lost in the current of the river so I had to search the treeline along the river for flies in the branches and managed to find a few! It's not over till it's over! I have also driven to a hunting spot and forgot the bullets...but that's for a different site.

Forget your flies? I've never done that. I make it a point to make sure I have all the flies I could possibly need packed in the truck before I leave. The trick is to place your vehicle's keys on top of your tackle bag, this way you can't start the engine unless you have the flies.

Now, rods, waders, reels, rain gear... that's another whole topic!

I had plenty of gear with me, just not the other 50% of the equasion. I had been tying and preparing my boxes the night before. When I was putting up my fly tying materials, I stuck my fly boxes right on top of my vice box, put it away and went outside to get some more gear together. It was some brilliant work on my part. The day ended up being shot on the fishing anyway because after two hours of getting skunked, I headed another thirty minutes to another creek and the wrath of god unleashed a storm that was unbelievable. Couldn't see the hood of the car much less the road. Only ended up with one fish the whole day. My fishing karma was absent that day for sure.

It is quite disturbing to end up on a trip without the right gear.
Happened to me on some occasions so everytime I forget something
or extra equipment would be handy I will write it down on a list.

My bags are now packed with the checklist in hand to minimize errors.
Tomorrow I am going on a short unplanned trip to Germanies Harz mountains so we will see how accurate the list is by now.

I have done this on occasion so I always keep a small assortment of flies in my Jeep and my Pickup truck. Thatway I always have a few flies maynot be the one I wanted but at least I was able to fish.

On MORE than one occasion I have placed my rod on the top of my car in order to get out of my waders and gear and then DRIVEN AWAY WITH THE ROD ON THE ROOF OF THE CAR!... A mile or so down the road I hear something shift on the top of the car and realize what I've done. Have to go looking on the side of the road where the rod FLEW off the roof. I must be lucky because I've never had any damage to rod or reel! Total idiocy.

last steelhead season, I drove to the river , pulled on my waders and ....no boots!!! That trip turned in to a "scouting" trip as I just drove the roads, and checked out some tributary conditions and access.

At laeast you did'nt forget your fly rod like I did on what was supposed to be a 3 day trip about 5 hours away from home.

Don`t feel bad Matt...I also just recently drove to one of my favorite rivers,only to find out I left my fly boxes on my tying table after tying up a bunch of new killer flies the night before Crying or Very sad

..but, thankfully ,I carry a small back-up box of flies in my backpack compartment with flies that are store boughten and not used very much...but, the trout ,thankfully did`nt care much that day Very Happy

...had a good day out despite... Wink

And..a few years back I met my brother on the stream very early after working late at night and went to string up my flyrod and found I had left my fly reel home Crying or Very sad

...but...he was gracious enough to take turns fishing with his rod...and we both caught a bunch of browns/rainbows a piece Wink

...brothers come in handy... Wink

The best thing to do I`ve found out..,if you think you`re going fishing the next morning..is to load all gear the night before... Wink
