I know some one has fished the San Juan River in New Mexico. But, it seems expensive to fish there. Can anyone post something as where to to stay and a get a giude for a day or two at a reasonable rate w/o giving up your first born as part of the payment.

Was there this month but not a fishing trip. Was in Albuquerque on busuness. Ventured to other places while there. Locals told me about the river and also I heard about it over the years. Would love to go back in Sept. or Oct. in 2009.

Hey there, I talked to my Sgt he says that if you have a set of chest high waders you won't need a guide. He says get a local map and you should be fine. He says that white or black leachs work really well!
Stay in farmington it will be cheaper to get a room there .
Hope this helps! Very Happy

Hey Dinger,

It is not expensive to fish the San Juan. There are many lodgings near the river that is not very expensive. And, there is camping which I do often; Sept and Oct. are very nice to out in the woods.

The towns of Bloomfield and Aztec have regular motels and are aprox., 20 miles away from the fishng. Both towns have restaurants, stores and such.

When you come to fish here you will surprised at the size of the flies used; 20, 22 and 24 with regularity. Equally, you will be surprised at the size of the fish.

As the date gets closer, you can more information on the river and fishng conditions.

See you on the stream. Thomas.

Thanks Trucha on the info. So u say the months of Sept. and October are good months. Thanks on that info. as well. How often do u fish there? And not to seek your hot spots but do you have a good palce for me to start fishing once I get there? I have a map from the forset service, so you can get as detailed as you wish. Again thanks.

Sept. or October are very nice months to be on the river. That is the normal time I do my workshops on the river. I also have camped many times during that time but be warned, you are at 6,000 feet high and next to the mountains; you can get snow at any time (doesn't effect the fishing, though).

I don't know if a nat. forest map will do you any good as the SJ below Navajo Dam is on BLM/state land. But, anyway.

Places to fish; Texas Hole, easy to get to. Be careful because it is deep. Lots of fish. Kiddy Pool, easy wading flat. Just up river from the TX Hole. You can spend the entire day on both areas. Many of the braided channels in the area are sometimes good choices. Other places; upper flats, cable run, lower flats - some of the shops in the area have maps. There are quite a few sites devoted to the SJ, too.

Anyway, see you on the river. Thomas.
