|
|
I hope I am posting this in the correct forum.
I recently picked up a sweet little 1 weight on sale. I am pretty excited about it, and it's the lightest rod in my arsenal. I am however, having a tough time finding a decent little 1 weight reel to go with it. I am hoping for something under $100. So far I have only found Orvis CFO and BBSI, as well as the Sage Click II and 4000 series, but those are all over $100
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
As for line. I am open to all ideas, although I am leaning towards Sage Quiet Taper II. I am more partial to a double taper line for this rod, but open to all schools of thought on the subject of ultralight fly fishing. I know Rio Makes a 1 weight line and I think Orvis has a couple 1 weight lines that are WF.
thanks for any help guys!! |

| Well exept for all the products that Orvis came out with, when they started with their 1wt rod, you can base yourself on the European market where, even if there are'nt many companies that make 1wt rod, there are planty of companies that have 2wt reels that woul fit a 1wt line too. As far as line you can also think about putting a Silk line that cortland makes or one form england like Airflo or Hardy. By, Nicco |

Thanks guys! I called orvis and due to a descrepancy, they honored a pretty good deal and so I have a BBSI coming in for the thing. Made for 1 - 3 weights under 100 bucks. with a spare spool.
I am still looking into line, and fairly sure that I will be using DT1. but since there is a spare spool, I might line it up with something else. Just not sure what. WF1 perhaps?
Nick, thanks for the line suggestions I am defintiely looking into those lines. |

I have used the BBS reels a bunch (i have a couple I use for guiding every day March-November and they haven't had a single problem). As far as the line goes, this one is tough is tough to beat

This line is very delicate and supple. A supple line will make a huge difference on that little BBS1 because it is not large arbor. After you strip some line off that reel your hub diameter decreases significantly. That smaller diameter will cause lots of memory (tight curley q's) in your line. A more supple line will not suffer from memory as bad. That's why I am not a big fam of any of the Wonderlines. The memory is terrible on every one I have used. Here in Utah we fish in the winter a bunch and colder temperatures stiffen the line coating and make it even more of a problem. |

I was worried about memory to be a problem.
I see the XPS goes as low as a 2 weight. I might just have to go 1 weight up on my line if it means no curls. I have used Sci Ang lines a lot and really like them so this might be solid choice for me.
Any experience with the Rio Trout II DT line? It also says memory free. |

| Yea, I have. It is a great line but not as supple and memory free as the XPS. |

Thanks for the info!
I picked up two new setups this month and so right now it looks like I am going to go XPS. I have th SciAng Trout mastery on my 5 weight and love that line.
If I am going up one line weight on my 1 weight TFO Finesse. Should I go DT? or WF? Or does it even matter? |

| The way I see it, you are only going to be fishing your one weight at very close distances. You are not going to need a weight forward line because you are not going to be casting far enough to even get the head of a WF line out to get any advantage of it. I would use a double taper because after you wear out one end of the line, you can just flip it around and fish the other side. 2 weight lines arent easy to come across so you might as well get the maximum amount of life you can out of it. |

Had a great oppurtunity to try out a 2 weight line on it. It felt heavy on the rod. I am new to ultralight fly fishing, but the 2 weight just felt too much for the tiny rod.
I tried out the DT1F line and it felt great on the rod. I am hoping memory isn't going to be a huge issue and hoping that ritual line stretching will work it out.
As for casting I was amazed at how well the 1 weight casts. The thinner line, creates less wind resistance, and so I am actually able to successfully lay out 20 - 30 feet ( i suck at judging distances) in 5 - 10 MPH day. Not my go to rod for windy days, but a breeze doesn't kill it.
Thanks for the great advice guys. I fell in love with the XPS line and bought some for my 4 weight and 5 weight. Too bad it doesn't come in 1 weight. |
