I will be in staying in Marathon for a week in Dec. 2009.I want to book a guide while there are still some good ones available.Any input, good or bad would be appreciated.
Did you say December? If that is correct you shouldn't have too hard of a time booking a guide in that area, there are many. My very strong recommendation is Capt Duane Baker, though he hails from Key Largo, and that might be a bit of a drive depending on where exactly you are staying, That said it is well worth it, he is one of, if not the best flats guide in the upper keys. On our first outing, some 10 years ago, I landed 3 big keys bones on fly, and each year since he has guided me to multiple bonefish & tarpon. check out his website at http://www.keysflatsguide.com/

My recommendation for any fly fishing guide recommendations in Florida would
be to get in touch with my long time friend and Florida resident Dave Tepper,
owner of www.fliesandfinssouth.com and one of the founders of Florida based
www.worldangling.com. Florida, like anywhere else, has so many guide
opportunities and it can be daunting to try to find a legitimate and good fly
fishing guide. I recently had a great trip with a legendary and phenomenal fly
fishing guide Joe Gonzalez out of Key Biscayne who was recommended to me by
another guide out of Biscayne, Raul Montoro, who is friends with Dave and
"connected" to the World Angling Crew. Because there are so many guides in
Florida it is nice to have a resource that can be trusted to recommend the best fly fishing guides who are committed to fly fishing, guides that are insured and guides that are licensed Florida captains and respected within the Florida Fly fishing community. I have also done several trips in the way back country of the Everglades and the Florida Keys with guys in "the crew" or recommended by the crew. www.fliesandfinssouth.com and www.worldangling.com and Dave Tepper and Will Benson are the only resources and people that I recommend to any friends and fliesandfins.com members traveling to Florida to fly fish. If you are
wondering if these guys can fly fish themselves .. fish you safely,
professionally and put you over fish watch these videos. They won the Drake
Magazine Award for Best Fly Fishing Video This Year with their "CONNECTED"
video. If you like Florida bonefish, permit and tarpon and looking for
guide recommendation. Look no further .. these guys can fly fish and guide and connect you with a guide that is perfect for you. These videos should help to show you their fly fishing skills, knowledge of the Florida fishery
and their professionalism.
So, if you are looking for a great fly fishing trip to Florida that includes do
it yourself fly fishing combined with a legitimate, safe and unforgettable
guided fly fishing experience, use
www.fliesandfinssouth.com and
www.worldangling.com

Another outlet that I often use and recommend for people is the ORVIS Endorsed guide/lodge/shop/outfitter program. If you value your safety and want to be ensured that you, your friends and your family is in good hands consider this resource for Florida or anywhere in the world. ORVIS does a great job at ensuring that each and every one of their endorsed operations meets a set of high standards set by Orvis ... great service, professionalism, safety and knowledge of the fishery. Every operation is conintually reviewed and evaluated by visiting guests in post trip critiques sent to Orvis by customers.
