I'm gonna head to the naknek river in september hopefully. I know a lot of members here have talked about fishing alaska and i thought it would be cool if some wanted to get together.
Here is the jist, will be fishing the naknek river for big rainbows (3 pound average and up to 36 inches long) at a do it yourself lodge, not sure which one yet. One lodge is 2500 for 6 days and one is 1500 for 7 days, both include lodging, boats, fuel and transportation from the airport. The latter also includes food
Unfortunately spots are filling up fast so if you want in let me know asap.
kodiak - i can't say that i am ultra serious and definatley not able to "commit" due to a number of reasons ... but alaska (especially the Naknek River and the Naknek Rainbows) interest me. But just like when going into Best Buy .. lots' of stuff (hd tv's, laptops, new cameras etc..) interest me .. but that doesn't mean I can buy them. Anyway, with that said .. if a guy were interested .. where would he fly into? Also, the fact that you are an Alaska resident and I think (though we have never met) I licensed Alaska guide that usually works in bristol bay .. interests me .. as it puts a sense of legitimacy on it .. as opposed to some guy from the "lower 48" rounding up a bunch of guys to go to alaska.. Anyway, where would a guy fly into? And, just out of curiosity and as a side note, are you not doing the bristol bay guiding thing this year? how did this summer go? how are things in kodiak alaska right now? cold i bet! good to see ya around fliesandfins - its been a while and was curious how your summer of guiding was and how you are doing. have you graduated from high school yet? if so going to college?
Well first off i've been out of high school since 04. I'm actually done with the guiding thing, got a job at the airport here and am starting to work on my pilots license on the side the ultimate goal of course is to become a pilot. I still am a licenced guide but i didn't want to guide forever and flying has always been a dream and offers a better long term career.
Anyway I will try to go into some more detail for the trip. Worth noting That the lodge i'm most interested in, www.naknekrivercamp.com, has only 6 spots open for the 19-26 and 4 for the 5-12. The other one i'm not sure about openings i will find out, it's web page is www.bristolbayfishing.com, more expensive than the other one but still a good deal compared to most lodges that run from 4 to 7 grand plus i've stayed at the latter before (see my naknek river fish tale from 05) and the owner is as cool as they come.
If one were to do this trip they would have to fly into anchorage airport and then hop on a alaska air or pen air flight to the town of king salmon. A round trip "lodge fair"(which is a special for for people staying at participating lodges) from anchorage to king salmon is about 450. You could then drive to either lodge in a short amount of time.
As far as fishing goes this is my favorite river in the state and has in my experience the hottest rainbows anywhere, several reputable nw steelhead guides have told me they are as hot as any nw steelhead even the famed thompson river strain. Number of fish caught and size of fish can vary but generally your average fish is around18 to 20 inches with fish up to 36 inches. The most fish i have caught was 55 in one day and the biggest was around 20 pounds. As far as techniques most fishing is september involves egg patters, most effectively beads, or flesh patterns. Fishing with beads is good all of september and catches the most fish in all size ranges. Flesh does better as the month gets later and can weed out the smaller fish to some degree. Both are fun but i prefer swinging flesh with the spey since the hits are downright electryfying.
The river itself is big and requires a jet boat to get around. Luckily most good fishing is concentrated at two places so even thought it's big water, the number of fish and high concetration make it much friendlier to an angler not used to big water say then the skeena or thompson or whatever.
Once again if anyone is interested let me know. I know one member is already.
If you want jeremy i can reserve a spot for u and then if u can't go we can just cancel it as long as we give the lodge enough notice.
