Orlando is smack in the middle of the state. Not much salt water fishing there. if you can make it to one of the costs, there are many beach opportunities, canal, and jetty fishing as well.

In Orlando lots of water, some is considered to be the best in the country for bass. i have not fished the Orlando area in many years. Typically in Florida if you can find some water to put a fly in, you will find fish.

You can expect to find large mouth bass, oscar, blue gill, gar, bow fin, and many more.

I am sure there are others on this board who can give you more details on were to start looking.

Hope this helps you plan what you are going to do. Definitely bring a rod with you.

about an hour east of Orlando is the Indian River/Mosquito Lagoon system, an amazing place to find redfish and seatrout. Several years back I visited orlando in January with the kids and grandkids, temps were in the mid 30's! But I went out with Capt John Kumiski (spotted tail charters) and we still managed several reds and trout on the fly. I don't know about the shore access, but kayaks rule there and there are many guides that service the area. Many guides launch from Titusville.

If there has been 1 consistent thing that I have seen through the years, its people asking what their options are in Florida for fishing .. I guess eveyrone is different - but If I was traveling to florida or anywhere else .. my willinginess to TRAVEL by car, let's say within 3 hours (1 way) is pretty good .. IF that will enable better fly fishing opportunties .. or if not "better" .. than opportunities that interest me .. let's say, more so that what is available in my immediate vicinity. For example if going to Montana, and I am styaing in Bozeman --it's (i think) three hours to THE BIG HORN RIVER .. but, I don't really see that as "too far" considering how for The Big Horn River is from Portland, Maine:) .. And, if the Big Horn River presents opportunities that I am really interested in for one reason or another -- I could easily convince myself to make the drive for a 1 day back and forth trip .. or an overnight trip (as part of my trip to montana, with Bozeman being my "home base.)

Anyway -- So, you're going to visit "Mickey" .. which probably means the trip is not entirely based around fly fishing .. So, let's say you're able to convince the wife/kids or whatever to alot 1 full day or even 2 full days to feeding your fishing habit .. and maybe you can even tie them into a little "micro" trip as part of your bigger "orlando" trip .. In which case .. you could go on a little adventure .. and do a number of things ..

1. Orlando to miami = 200 miles - 3hrs drive time - you could fish biscayne bay area.. however, the "wading" options are not that great .. but, if you were interested in spending money on a guide - than your now in Bonefish, Permit world.

2. Orlando to Ft. Myers area = 200 miles -- So, get down to the ft myers/naples area .. and now you got some options available to you that you won't have up in Orlando .. You can fish the backcountry of the everyglades for Tarpon, Snook, Redfish with a guide .. or if your interested in some DIY .. or a combination of Do it yourself + 1/2 day with guide or whatever .. you could easily access the Tamiami Trail and cast to snook and baby tarpon on foot .. or there are some wading options for jacks/snook around the naples beaches ...

Bottom Line - Consider this option .. and just because your in orlando and there may or may not be some good fishing options in your immediate vicinity -- consider the option of convincing the wife-kids or whatever to let you do a "micro" trip yourself or with them .. to locations within a 3/4 hour drive ..

PS. Obviously, you could apply this approach if your home base was going to be in say "Ft Myers" .. or "Miami" .. because then a "micro trip" to the keys .. wouldn't be out of the question ...

Ok - hope this helps! Good Luck
