Good Post .. I'd like to also know what fly line people are using MOST for saltwater applications?
TROUT - I use the Scientific Angler mastery series of line. Why? Well it does cast really nice and all that but ya know what? It's one of the only trout lines (floating) that I can find that is not some obnoxious flourescent yellow, orange or hot green color. Maybe it's just me and it is just a mental thing but I don't like those loud colors for my fly line. I prefer more naturally toned colors - and the Scientific Angler mastery series of trout fly lines offers a nice NATURAL olive'ish color that I really like.
SALTWATER - Floating = I like scientific angler bonefish taper fly line and striper taper fly line, Intermediate = Airflow and Sinking = Orvis Depth Charge (300 grain).
Curious to hear what others use. |

PS - On a seperate note, there was a very popular thread on the "new" (not new anymore) SHARKSKIN FLY LINE - curious if anyone has any more insight on this specific fly line. So as to not clutter the two posts, (because this post is a related but seperate topic) - Please see existing reviews of Sharkskin Fly Line - and if anyone has any more new insight or information to add - please follow this link and post review/comments/insight here Sharkskin Fly Line

My fly lines are all over the place, I have Sage, Rio, SA, and Orivs lines.
Trout: I usually use the Sage Quiet Double Taper II. This line has held up well for me. It floats well, loads the rods with out much line out of the tip, and turns over long leaders. I do have a few Rio lines i use for my faster 4 and 5 weight rods. When i am fishing larger flies, the Rio lines seem to turn over the larger dry flies a little better, and will cast a fly with a dropper very easily. I like the welded loops, for a while SA was not doing welded loops, i would get a little tip sink when the lines would get older.
Over the years i have fluctuated between manufactures. The only constants have been the sage lines and the Orvis intermediate lines. Not many manufactures make a line for the 00 and 0 rods. I just like the Orvis intermediate line over all the others i have tried.
Salt water: For me is all about shooting line. I do a lot of beach and canal fishing where it seems the fish are always 10 feet out of casting range or you have a restricted back cast. For salt i use the Rio out bound, SA saltwater, SA bonefish, and Rio redfish. I all of these lines shoot well, stand up to the salt water environment, and do well in the heat.
i don't think you can go wrong with any line purchased from one of the major manufactures. The general lines like the SA GPX, the Rio Grand, or the Orvis Wonder line are all great lines. |

For most of my trout fishing i use SA mastery series
for Spey fishing for trout on big rivers i like using a rio skagit head with some sort of slick mono running line and 10 or so feet of t-14 or t-8.
If i need to make 80 to 100 plus foot cast on big rivers with a single hand rod i like rio gold or rio versitip. |

And Airflow Intermediate coldwater for Stripers/Albies/Blues
Recently fished a triangle taper floating line in the salt, and loved it. |

Orvis for Fresh. Though that may change soon.
Airflo for salt. I love the Airflo lines The sinking line I have from them gets down quick at 7" a second. Very thin line also. That can be a problem in a striping basket. But is really throws far.
Jeremy Airflo has a line similar to the sharkskin idea. It is what they call their ridge lines. I have the intermediate version. It throws well. One thing I heard about the sharkskin is that it can start to cut through your hand and guides. I haven't had any problems like that with the ridge line. Same concept, different design. If feels smoother but has ridges cut into the coating, of the shooting head portion only, which reduces the resistance against the guides |

I mostly fish for trout and salmon, not too much salt (yet.) I have used Orvis wonderlines and Sci Angler Mastery GPX. Both good, but I like the GPX better. The Orvis seems stiffer, so has more memory issues in the cold. I have a Bass wonderline 6 wt that I like - in warmer weather coiling from memory is not an issue.
I agree with Jeremy on color - I like the dull green of the GPX. |

| i use rio change-a-tip for my trout fishing and for saltwater i use the rio lumalux and clouser coldwater line.i have tried airflo and cortland but didn't like them too much.the welded loops have a great connection on the change-a-tip and don't hinge like the airflo change-a-tip.i have always heard great things about orvis wonderline and am going to try that out this season for a change.hope you all have a great season! |

| I use Loop lines for fresh water and cold salt. An for tropic saltwater I prefer the SA lines because I don’t feel that they tangle as much as, for instance the Rio lines... |

| Good eye valentin - This should be moved into the "Reviews" forum .. Kory_K is our "Fly Shop Manager" -- I am sure he'll see this when he gets to work (online) in the morning -- and move it to the appropriate place .. Thanks. |

As Jeremy indicated and valentin brought up, this post was moved to the Reviews forum as it evolved into a much more comprehensive review of fly lines that encompassed both fresh and salt. It makes more sense to be in this forum.
Thanks

SA GPX
Rio Grande
SA Ultra 4
SA Sharkskin
I like the Sharkskin and that is my latest line. It does cut you, if you're not careful how you strip the line, but casts great. The GPX is probably my favorite line over all and I have an 8wt version as well.
Those are just my trout lines, and really only my floating lines. I have an Intermediate and Full Sinking line, but don't remember what lines they are. I think Rio, but can't recall for sure. I don't use them much since I prefer fishing rivers over lakes, but pull out the sinkers in the spring, during run off and after the steelhead rivers close down... |
