Very cool! Not sure how far the school will let you guys go .. but mine as well go big! (or at least try to go big and work backwards from there:) .. So, I assume we are talking about a "trip" withing driving distance of Pittsburgh .. and we are not talking about your high schools corporate jet and a trip to New Zealand - So, don't know if its in range but you might want to consider a Steelhead trip! I don't know the region all that well ... but looks like you are in relatively close distance to
1. LAKE ERIE - where you could possibly fish the Chagrin and other rivers (my friend boz (greg bostater) knows this region of erie pretty well as he grew up there and still fishes the chagrin and others when he goes home for holidays.) .. also, lots of good steelhead water in Buffalo NY region of Lake Erie . and that is only 219 mi from Pittsburgh and only 3 and 1/2 hour drive. Lot's of guys on this site fish and know that region of Erie (I am not one of them) ... but, I am certain that the guys who regularly fish it would be happy to help you out with a little info for your school sponsored trip .. good to see younger guys like you and your friends interested in fly fishing ... and your schools sponsoring fly fishing trips .. great actually! anyway, hope this helps .. and I'll shoot an email to Boz for you on the chagrin stuff and I am sure some of the Erie guys will help you out .... Sorry, I do most of my steelheading on Lake Ontario ... wish I could be of more help. We'll get ya dialed in though .. no worries. |

Scott,
Jeremy is right about steelheading opportunities east of Cleveland in Ohio and also due north of you in Pennsylvania as well. Plenty tributaries, with lots of fish. Pm me if you want more info...on it.
How experienced are the fly fishers? Is this a first time outing, or avid anglers going?
Another good place to fish in Penn is the Clarion river...I have some friends that catch some nice browns out of it and it might be even be a tad closer than the steelhead tribs of Lake Erie.
Hope this helps a little... |

Scott,
Not sure what you're looking to do or when. So with the Erie trib's full of Steelhead that boz and J mentioned you also have some closer otions for Browns and rainbows around Altoona and State College area. The Yough is also an option to do. Just be careful as this has some serious white water sections. However many oufitters around that area to assist. If interested just search for ohiopyle and start reading.
good luck |
