1 Based on the recent popularity of the posts about Tipping A Fly Fishing Guide and Becoming A Fly Fishing Guide the newest chapter of
The Fly Fishing Book - by fliesandfins.com has been realized (based on level of member interest, lack of a common understanding and a need for a generally agreed upon collective understanding), established and is already in the making!
2. David Severson (waterwhippa) is going to write the chapter. Dave is probably the most diplomatic person I know. He is very cognicent and able to speak for both "guides" and "fisherman" perspectives.
3. The philosophy of "The Fly Fishing Book - by fliesandfins.com" is to create a new form of "Book" where each chapter is done by 1 person that has credibility with the subject matter at hand. And content (10 pages per chapter) is driven by the TITLES of each PAGE within any chapter - and the authors ability to add value to the chap and "The Fly Fishing Book" within the context of each chapter and the context of the entire book. This book and the concept of this book is based entirely of the SOCIAL MEDIA platform that fliesandfins.com Is and has always been. Fliesandfins.com is not about any 1 person, 1 fish, 1 place ... everything about this site and the total value resides in the TOTAL SOME OF IT'S parts - and the total value brought to the table each and every member.
4. So - DAVE is writing this chapter on behalf of EVERYONE - he will be using the forum and research gathered from US and our discussions to construct this NEW chapter in a way that, when its done, we can ALL say - Good Work, Dave! In the case of this INTERACTIVE and SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN chapter, Dave's roll is to be a research analyst - reaching out to us (including YOU) for our thoughts from time to time .. and developing 10 TOPICS (pages) of the chapter that speak to value added topics that make sense and interest BOTH guides and fisherman.
So - This site and all the social communication around "tipping a guide" made us realize exactly what the need for the NEXT chapter is in the "Fly Fishing Book .. by fliesandfins.com" .. and when we reached out for an author - Dave Severson made perfect sense - mostly because of his ABILITY to write from a diplomatic, research and non-biased view point ... So, I am so excited about this chapter .. and especially since when this chapter is COMPLETE .. it will ULTIMATELY have been written by ALL OF US (you included) .. and we can ALL say - GOOD WORK dave - and GOOD WORK fliesandfins.com .. and THEN .. we can ALL decide upon what Chapter 5 will be .. but for now - we can all agree that there is a NEED for CHAPTER 4 "BEING A GOOD GUIDE & CUSTOMER" ... we have already proven that --- now, with DAVE as our "pencil" .. let's ALL write the chapter... Sound good? I believe this is the new form of 'BOOK' and even if its not - I like this new form of SOCIAL MEDIA AUTHORSHIP and PUBLISHING .. because its fast, fresh and built up a COLLECTION of real time editing, insight and collaboration - rather than just 1 persons viewpoint... and this book - is right in line with the NATURE of fliesandfins.com --
So - DAVE - lets start by getting letting people know
1. THE TITLE? - does everyone like it? If not - let's modify
2. The 10 Topics (pages) - that we have to start - does everyone like it? - If not - let's modify |

Here are the ideas of pages that we have drafted up so far. Any suggestions, critiques or insight would be great because the ultimate goal of this chapter is as Jeremy stated to have the community craft the pages and give feedback about what is important to you on a personal level while engaged in a guide / guest type of dynamic. It would be great to hear from both sides of the fence. Everybodys feedback is imperative, in order to have non-biased pages and a chapter on this topic. I'm not crazy about #1...seems kind of vague to me....what do you guys think?
CHAPTER 4 - "BEING A GOOD GUIDE & CUSTOMER"
1. Guiding: Know Where You Are
2. Guiding: Evolution of a Guide
3. Guiding: More Than Just a Fisherman
4. Guiding: Freshwater, More Than Meets the Eye
5. Guiding: Saltwater, A Different World
6. Mystery of The Fisherman:
7. Do it Yourself With a Guide
8. Choosing Your Guide and Choosing your Customer.
9. Friends for life.
10. Payment |

So - here are my thoughts - so far - I think we are 80% there - here are some issues .. YOU ALL BETTER HELP!
CHAPTER 4 - "BEING A GOOD GUIDE & CUSTOMER" (this title is a little stupid - we could have something more creative, i think?)
1. Guiding: Know Where You Are (good - i like this title - and speaks to different regions, stats in usa, different cultures, countires, etc..)
2. Guiding: Evolution of a Guide (good - i like this title - and speaks to the process of how and why a fisherman becomes a guide).)
3. Guiding: More Than Just a Fisherman (good - i like this title - and speaks to how a guide is more than just a fisherman .. a friend, safety, certifified, qualified, teacher but not a TELLER, etc..))
4. Guiding: Freshwater, More Than Meets the Eye (good - i like this title - and speaks to freshwater is NOT just trout - its steelhead, atlantic salmon, pike, musky, bass etc..))
5. Guiding: Saltwater, A Different World (good - i like this title - and speaks to how completely different fresh and saltwater are in terms of guiding.)
6. Mystery of The Fisherman: (TITLE COULD USE A LITTLE WORK - but i like the concept from the perspective of the guide should not assume anything about the guy on the bow of his boat .. he could have fished yesterday with your competitor and had a great time .. and know where the fish are .. or could be an incredible fisherman who has been fishing "your" waters for 40 years .. so, as the guide -- its important to ask and know who you are guiding ..)
7. Do it Yourself With a Guide -- (LOVE this title - i like concept too -- speaks to the nature of a fly fisherman to WANT to do it themselves, after all that is part of the appeal of fishing - its a personal sport with personal accomplishments - so enlighten us on why a guide STILL fits nicely into that reality)
8. Choosing Your Guide and Choosing your Customer. -- (LOVE this title - speaks to how its important to choose a guide thats right for YOU -- and how its good for a guide to choose his/her customers")
9. Friends for life (Great title here - pretty obvious what it will speak to -- if a guide finds a good customer and a fisherman finds a good guide -- the relationship would extend much further past 1 day on the water in terms of both friendship and business and fishing)
10. Payment- (good title might want to include "tipping" in title - - right to the point - and summarize a VERY GENERAL rule of thumb based on both fisherman and guides perspectives and accounting for world location of guided trips and culture and customs .. how payment and specifically tipping should be handled)
OK ---- looking forward to hearing other peoples suggestions before dave gets to work writing his chapter --- but i think anyone who knows dave or has read his writing and knows his diplomatic ways and ability to write this chapter from a NON BIASED perspective and putting himself in the shoes of both fisherman and guide .. would agree that dave severson is the right man for the job --- so give him your input -- now is the time -- and what will make this chapter so great is the input we already have from everyone and continued input or suggestions before dave starts his work of writing the chapter -- so, lets here your thoughts. |

There seems to be some concern over the title of the chapter. I might humbly suggest that once the chapter is written, it may be easier to create the title. It seems clear that the chapter is about the relationships, expectations and obligations of guides and fishing customers, I have found that my writing doesn't always follow my initial plan and that the final version (that I generally feel is better than the original plan) isn't always completed just as it had been conceived. After it is all on paper (on magnetic media?) the title will be much easier to create since it really falls out of what you have written.
However, to get a little more emotion in the title I suggest "Chapter 4. The Guide and the Fisherman: The Relationship Starts Like A Blind Date?" Unfortunately the analogy drifts toward hookerdom with the 10th item.
