Hey, welcome to the site. I live in Western PA and know many good trout streams in the area. But to give you the best ideas, I just have to ask a few questions. What time of year are you looking to fish? Second, Western PA is big, are you going to be staying in a certain area? And third, a question of preferance, what type of fishing do you like? Big water, small water, dry fly action, nypmphing...etc. Let me know and I'll be able to help you out.

The best stream that I know close to Pittsburgh would be Neshannock Creek. It is in Volant, which is maybe 40 minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh. Your best bet would be to call Bob there at Neshannock Creek Outfitters and tell him your situation. I am more familair with streams further North of Pittsburgh. In the spring, you can't beat Oil Creek in the Titusville/Oil City area. Hatches are insane, and there is INCREDIBLE dry fly fishing starting with the Grannoms in April all the way through Sulphurs in Early June. A section of Oil Creek runs through a beautiful state park as well, which makes for a good overall experience. Sorry, I may not have been as helpful as you expected, but do Call Bob and he'll be a good help, I'm sure.
If you have time to travel, I really encourage you to come try Steelheading in the Erie area, my home. It is a great time...and we will have good fishing through March.
Hope I was able to help. Good Luck.

Scott,
You may want to try some of the water in Fayette and Somerset counties. Dunbar Creek has a C&R fly fishing only section. Meadow Run in Ohiopyle has a Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only section. Both are aproved trout waters.
In Confluence you will find the Casselman River and Laurel Hill creek. These are also both approved trout waters and have DHALO sections. The Youghiogheny has a trouphy trout section near Ramcat Run. The Yough in general is good for bigger water, from the dam in Confluence to Connellsville. The areas around Smithton and West Newton, Westmoreland County, are stocked by the state and local clubs.
Check the PA fish and boat site for additional information on these streams and stocking info.
I also recommend a trip to Erie for Steelbows.
Hope this helps you get started,
Keith |

| Thanks for the info guys . . . I'm in Eastern OH now but have fished mostly in Michigan and Wisconsin for trout with flies. I do fish Erie stellhead, but have yet to make it to PA. I'm reading a book about PA limestone streams, but I'll fish any good trout water. |

| Not real sure how backwoods Fly Fishing your looking to get yourself into, but here in early march, The Little Mahoning Creek Fly Projects is fairly decent for natives right now. Your not gonna be catching wall-mounters or anything, but it's genuine BFE Fly Fishing man. Dead float like 14 or 16 size Black Stone Fly nymphs off the bottom and bingo bango! ha... Bout an hour and a half from pittsburgh up rt119 towards Punxsutawney... If you decide to fish it, email me and I'll get ya the right flies while your loco. |
