|
|
So I finally decide what the Heck !, had a Week off, drove down south of Germany past Munich, was contemplating if I should stop by the October Fest down there, but the fish was calling, my destination the Salzach River in Northern Austria.
The location I was at was breathtaking, very beautiful River surrounded by mountains on both sides, my priority Graylings, stayed in town for three days, the first day was more sightseeing then anything, the first day caught numberous Brown trout and one grayling toward the end of the day, called it quits, realized I was on an island and the water level was rising.
The last day, I had more luck with Graylings, was my first time ever fishing for these beautiful fish, switch out my nymph for a dry fly when the were rising to feed, after that it was Graylings after Graylings.
So I finally broke myself in, Knocked out two birds with one stone, caught my first European Trout and my First Grayling ever, definately I'll come back down to Austria again. |

This way Jeremy you can do a lttle sight seeing an fishing. And Ill be glad to help you, Troutbone, if you are ever back that way. |

nicko -- very cool, and thank you for the invite!! italy would be a wonderful place to visit and fish someday. it would be an honor to cast a fly in your countries water. also, europe seems like a great place to travel with a fly rod .. as the train systems could take a fisherman to various countries and regions and places to fish...
ps.... if i do make it to itally what about food? is it readily available and tolerable to eat? .. just kidding, of course .. i think i might come back 10 pounds heavier after a fishing trip to italy .. i love italian food. |

Yeah right, who was whining over that mediterrean pizza
Anyway congrats troutbone to your salmonids catch, you finally did it.
If I remember correctly I even have German relatives who live in a town
at the Salzach river, maybe a visit is in order one of these days. |

Good job Troutbone! If I knew you would be there I would definitely come and join you.
I am travelling to the area of Salzach tomorrow and will be fishing until Sunday. However, this time I have decided to skip Salzach and fish in Fuscher Ache which flows to Salzach |

|
|
This seems like the perfect thread for my questions.
I am looking at taking a trip and staying in the Hotel Lisa for a few days of flyfishing. Have any of you stayed at this hotel or fished the waters in Flachau? What are the best patterns to use in this area? When is the best time to go?
It has been a few years since I have had a chance to do any serious fishing and I want to get the most out of it.
Thanks in advance |

Hi Kicknsand,
Hotel Lisa is nice place to be and has interesting 5 waters/rivers for fishing. One part of Salzach belongs to them (although not one of the very best ones), a good part of Enns (water varies from section to section), the pearl of Austria - TORRENER ACHE, Mur - one of the best and biggest salmonid river and Mondsee Ache - huge mixed river with salmonids and pikes in it
Salzach - went through most of its part and frankly speaking didn't like it as much as I liked the other parts. Too many parts with very fast water and full of rocks. However, you will find some good pools there of different depth, from 60-70cm to 4m, full of strong fish. This part of the river is very well known for the very strong native brown trouts and big rainbows. NO STREAMERS
Enns - it is a very interesting area of Enns river. Hotel Lisa definitely ows one of the best sections. There are some small pools full of big fish and also slow flowing shallow sections where you will have good catches with dry flies. The only annoying thing is that you may encounter people fishing with the spinning rod. Never asked whether it is really allowed but obviously it is since they didn't run away when they saw flyfisherman there:)
Torrener Ache - this is a real beauty. Small river, nice pools, gin clear water which means a lot of sneaking, kneeling while fishing, etc. You can find big trouts as well but the ones of 30-35 cm prevail. A paradise for each fishmerman. Excellent catches on dry fly
Mondsee Ache - nice river, a bit too wide and deep for my taste. Huge brown trouts are to be found but a lot of pikes and barbel as well. not one of my favourite ones especially since big part of it is not easy accessible and also you need waders everywhere. Goldhead nymphs are the best to use, NO STREAMERS
Mur - Hotel Lisa has also one of the best sections of Mur. It is really beautiful, full of deep pools where you have to fish with sinking line. Huge trouts to be found there, mainly rainbows. There is also Char - good sized, Grayling and in lower section also Danube Salmon (Huchen). If you go there you should definitely fish in Mur for a trophy of your trip.
Ok, in general, everything is perfect there. You cannot fish with streamers (unless they changed the rules). The best period I heard is the first two weeks of April, then September and October while the best time of the year is 1-15 June.
a minus - all the rivers are far from the hotel:( |

| I need to figure out what they considered a streamer in this area. I have a couple of patterns that are tied on streamer hooks but are not technically streamers. I like tying some variation flys that dont "match the hatch" but seem to work well for lazy fish that arent interested in anything else. |

| yes, the best is to check with the fishing specialist of Hotel Lisa. I do not remember right now what they consider to be a streamer but in most of the places here, every FLY with the length of over 2cm is considered to be a streamer:(. And it is not only the hook that counts but also the tale of the fly. I had an issue once with a controller in one of the rivers when he caught me fishing with size 10 wolly bugger. we were arguing for 15 min whether a he insisted that I don't fish with it anymore so I had to give up of my best fly for that water. In addition, Hotel Lisa waters can be fished with barbless hooks only |
