I've been flyfishing for 13 years. Left my home of Missouri (in the Ozarks) and moved 30 minutes south of Milwaukee. I'm dying to get a line in the water and I live about 20 blocks from Lake Michigan. I'm looking for trout water other than the Lake. Any help? I know I'll probably have to go north. I've heard good things about the Bois Brule and the Wolf...

Hey Dave,

Never been near that area or fished it, but I heard, read, and have seen things about the rivers surrounding the great lakes. In the fall, they have some huge migratory browns and of course steelhead. Other than that I have no clue. If you are after more than trout, there should be ponds and lakes where you can find bass. I have talked to some friends and they have fished the northern part just south of Canada. Said fishing is good up there. Hope any of this helps. If not, just fly out or drive out to Montana for a little slice of trout heaven on the Blackfoot. If you are ever in the area again, I strongly suggest fishing Flint Creek. It's very different from other streams in that it is super quiet and there are some surprisingly big fish in the area. Take care.

My brother fished Flint while he lived in Missoula. He also told me about Fish Creek. My wife is from Missoula, actually, and we try to go out every year in the early summer. I get to hit the Blackfoot quite often--almost a pilgrimage of sorts. Oh yeah, and Rock Creek.

Thanks for the input. I live in SE Wisconsin and I've heard of the tributary fishing on the Pike and Root rivers and of better trout water up north. I've never been tributary fishing--mostly small streams for small fish.

Unfortunately, I'm also a trout snob. But I am looking to tangle with Muskie on a fly! Thanks for the info.

I have heard a lot of good things about rock creek. Some of the nicest water in practically the nicest place I know. Never done muskie on a fly but i heard it's something else. Where is fish creek by the way? is that in the area?

my brother never divulged it to me. He only said when I come he'll have to take me. It was a recomendation by one of the local fly shops and Gary LaFontaine. We are planning a vacation out there this summer. Maybe I'll be able to check it out. Rock Creek is beautiful indeed but you have to travel to the upper section to get into the good fishing. The lower section (from I-90 to about 5 miles up) is good brown water lots of ripples. the Upper Section has a lot of bows, cuts and brookies, along with an occasional bull. It's fast with a lot of pocket water. There is also the prolific Salmon fly hatch that brings out the big bruisers. There are days when you can catch and release 20+ fish. The stuff of dreams.

There are no Trout in SE Wisconsin. Most of what you find in South Western Wis, known as the Driftless area, is small spring creek type fishing. Same for Northern Wis. The Bois Brule is a a nice river, but a long drive. Western Michigan has excellent fishing and is probably a shorter drive, or a quick trip across the lake on the High SPeed Ferry from Milwaukee. Two places to check on the web, Hawkins Outfitters and Pere Marquette Lodge.

Thanks for the help. My local friends are telling me the steelies should be running within the next couple of days, especially after a good rainfall. Michigan would be a good trip. Thanks, I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile another winter storm is rushing through. c'mon spring weather--oh maybe this is spring weather for WI. Smile
