Hey guys,

I will be heading up to Idaho and Oregon this summer to fish. I will try my luck at the famed Silver Creek, the Big Wood, and the Lost, and in Oregon I plan on fishing the Fall, Deschutes, and the Crooked Rivers. Is there any reccomendations on where else I should go? you don't have to give up your secret spot. Anywhere where you guys like and would be worth fishing when i am up there?

troutaddict,

You might add The Henry's Fork in Idaho...that's a famous river alright, huge water, and if you haven't spent a few days exploring it, well you might regret not stopping to fish it. Stay near Last Chance and stop in to two great shops there.

Also the Metolious in Oregon. Not a huge river, really it's a spring creek over lava rock. It holds some of the strongest red band Rainbows I've ever seen. Stunningly beautiful.

The Crooked's cold, really cold water. so be prepared. You might like the Klamath River.

I'd skip The Lost (IMHO) and concentrate on Silver Creek and the Big Wood. Two great fisheries. I'd read up on Silver Creek, it's hatches are legendary and have pleanty of patterns. It's the PHD of spring creeks.

I would like to go back and fish those rivers.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks so much Marshall. I appreciate it. Will definetely look into fishing those spots. All of it sounds fantastic. I have heard the same thing about Silver Creek. Supposedly it is the PHD of fly fishing. Going to have to bring the best game I have. Thanks for the info.

What is the time frame of your trip? How long will you have? Just curious as that would play a big role in where I would choose to go.

That time of the year it can get pretty hot, so I would focus on the spring creeks and tailwaters where you will find colder temperatures. Also at that time, terrestrials are a big part of the food source so make sure you have plenty of ants, beetles and hoppers.

I have fished Oregon, but only for steelhead a little later than when you will be there. However, the Deschutes steelhead come into that river in August and it can be pretty good in the lower river at that time. If you decide to chase the steelhead there, focus on early morning and evening when the sun is off the water. Check in with the locul shops around maupin and they will let you know if the fish are in yet. It is highly water temperature dependant. You can fish for redsides (the deschutes native redband rainbow trout) with a dry and dropper rig and occasionally hook steelhead so that can be a good way to go. Just be prepared for an epic battle if a fresh steelhead grabs your fly!

I am more familiar with Idaho for trout fishing. I have fished Silver Creek several times and it is an awesome place, but yes it is very technical. At that time, one of the major hatches is the trico hatch. The spinnerfall in the morning is the big draw and the water can be literally blanketed with bugs. They are extremely small though size #22-#26 and the fish can be extremely selective. If you can't get them to eat a trico imitation, try fishing a terrestrial such as an ant or beetle imitation or one of the larger damselflies that are all over the place that time of year. Typically most anglers only fish the morning at that time and then you will have it to yourself after the tricos are done so that is a good time to just cover water with a terrestrial or damselfly or even a streamer which most people don't bother with especially midsummer. I would also fish late into the evening when you can get trico duns hatching as well as caddis and other bugs coming back to lay eggs.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

If you are looking for flies or gear there is a Sportsmans warehouse in twin falls that has a good selection of flies and they should be able to give you the river conditions as well as advice on what flies are working on them. Hope this helps! Very Happy
