Hi,
I noticed that Lamson has a new (at least new to me) addition to their line of reels, the Guru. I have a Lite Speed that I love, but I need a new reel for my 5 wt and am wondering what the difference (beside looks) there is between the Lite Speed and the Guru. They're both bar stock and both have the same drag system. Does anyone own the Guru or have any opinion on it?
The Lamson Guru Reel is a reel that Waterworks Lamson introduced this year in order to have a less expensive fly reel that is still fully machined. It kind of replaced the Radius Reel that was discontinued previously, with a little higher quality reel. The differences between this reel and the litespeed that you currently own are the weight, the anodization and the diameter. The Guru is a little bit heavier, but not by a whole lot. It has a slightly smaller diameter so you won't get quite as quick of a retrieve but not too significantly. The anodization is a type II, whereas all of the higher priced reels have a type III anodization which give the finish much more scratch resistance and durability. That is probably the biggest difference in the two reels, the finish as a result of the anodization. As far as the drag goes, they are identical. Hope that info helps.
Thanks for the feedback. If the difference between the Guru and the Litespeed is essentially just the finish, then that's a big enough of a price difference where I'll give it a whirl.
