| As an avid fly fisherman I can get stuck in the same old routine of using basically the same flies every time I go out. I’ve caught fish on these flies numerous times and my confidence is high on them. But what about the days when they don’t work? I’ve found that emerger and cripple patterns have saved the day for me more than once. Emergers are especially effective when there is a hatch and fish are feeding on the surface. Most anglers mistake the fact of rings on the surface as a fish feeding on top. That is not always the case. More often than not they are taking emergers or cripples just under the surface. The momentum of the attack takes them just under the surface, creating a wake, or rise form. There are many emerger patterns available for almost any hatch and I almost exclusively use them versus the adult patterns. As far as cripple patterns go, they can be a little harder to find. You know those flies you throw away at the vise because they didn’t come out just right? Maybe the hackle was twisted a little, or a wing accidentally was chopped off, use them! Sometimes the nastiest looking flies work better than the cookie cutter commercial flies. I’m curious to see if anyone else has found this to be true, especially during hatches of adults on the surface. |
