im heading to ft lauderdale in a couple of weeks and other than decievers and clousers, are there any patterns that anyone can suggest i might have with me, or get while i am there? we will mostly be in the big blue water for dolphin and whatever else.
Alsoi have an 8wt rod i am taking with me, will i be taking a knife to a gun fight? if anyone can offer up suggestions on a saltwater outfit i might need to consider that would be great.
thanks! |

8w should be just fine for schoolie dolphin but for some bigger fish you might want to bring a 10. Albies might be in.
Get the Hamilton Eat Me fly, a South Florida offshore staple. Contact the Ole Florida Fly Shop in Boca Raton for different variations as well as other bluewater patterns.

| I would also take some poppers of some sort. There are a myriad of baitfish flies out there these days and many of them will work. There are a lot of guys on here that fish florida or live in florida that can give you some good advice as well. Pete is accurate about rod for schoolie dolphin, but bigger ones and other species you may be undergunned. Also, if you get wind (almost a guarantee) or are throwing bigger flies or sinking lines which are the norm the 8 will also be a lot more work. If you have access to a bigger rod, I would definitely recommend it. |
