I had an awesome day on the Platte this past Saturday. We hiked down into Fremont Canyon and hit a semi-secret spot. I say "semi-secret" because the canyon itself is not a big secret, but the wading route needed to get into some of these pools is somewhat of a secret.
This is a section in a canyon known as "Land of the Lost", but that is not the official name. We had to get creative with the wading to get into some of these spots. At one point I was leaning into the white water with my feet on a shelf and my hands in the water holding on to rocks to get across. Water was pounding into my chest and my rod was in my teeth. It was crazy.
We all caught a bunch of fish, but I was only able to take a few fish photos when I was in a spot where it was feasible to get the camera out. There were others where I would have surely dropped my camera int he water or taken a fall.
It was snowing when we arrived
Hiking down
This area is an amazing sight
A deep pool that I hit later, on the way out when a BWO hatch came on.
My friend fishing one of the smaller pools
Some scenics in the canyon:
Entering the Land of the Lost:
My first fish of the day!
I was burr cold...
More wild 'bows...
On our way out, I hit a big pool and found a fish rising to some BWO's...
It was a great day...

That's pretty average flow. They keep it pretty steady year round, from what I understand. This canyon is a short section between two reservoirs (Pathfinder and Alcova). THis section is really only fishable in the winter and spring months - after the middle to end of May it turns super green and visibility goes in the toilet.
BTW, our fish were average size (12 to 20 inches) but there are reports of 30 inch fish in these pools. I guess I just need to try harder. |

Just got home from fishing this section...... May 31 and still pretty clear. We made our way all the way to the big impassable (without swimming) pool as far downstream as you can see in the pics. Couldn't get a keeper though. I caught a 10", 8" and 14" rainbow. My bro caught an 18", 12" and 2 10" rainbows down in the canyon and then he caught a 19" brown in the pool just upstream of the trail. Too bad you only get to take one and it must be 20" or greater.
What an awesome day!!! |
