| After spending a few years messing around with largemouth bass in the Midwest, I think its time to step it up a notch. Not too much has been reported about fishing peacock bass in Brazil. When I see pictures of these fish, it makes me want to send away for a passport, sell my truck, and head south! I’m wondering what techniques are used to catch these fish? Streamers, top-water poppers, small cats? Is it worth spending the money to seek after these exotic fish? I have a friend who has a tattoo of every fish he has caught. His logic is ‘it will make a sweet sleeve,’ but it seems so far away of an idea with this current economy. Is it possible to do a do-it-yourself trip? Any suggestions would be greatly helpful. |

| I'm no expert on Peacock or for that matter have even try for them, but you mention Brazil, I know quite some few people that go after these species in Florida, not too sure how well they do compare to the fishing in Brazil or the size differences on them, but theres a couple of guide buisness in Florida that just specialized in these species, might be on the budget you're looking for and save you a plane ticket, as well as go after other species in Florida that most midwesterner crave for or hear about since we don't have a coastline. |

I think Jeremy, Marshall, Headrush and others have done that Peacock bass thing with guide Mark Hall in Miami - there must be a fishtale or video on this site.
So you keep your truck, drive south and fish for the exotics in Florida.
You could also combine that with some saltwater flyfishing for Snook, Tarpon and those other gems that swim around down there. |

Peacock bass rock. They are so explosive when they crush a fly.
It's real possible to take a DIY trip for them in South Florida. Like Matt M says you can find them in a lot of places.
The giants you see down in Brazil are speckled peacocks. Florida has butterfly peacocks that grow to about nine pounds or so but average 3-5 pounds, with a six pounder being a real special fish.
Mark Hall is a great guy to start with and not too expensive. Google him and give him a call.
5w or 6w is all you need and clousers, poppers, chartreuse or green baitfish patterns with good eyes. Strip fast, man... |
