Hi, I am new to this forum, and this is my first post. I am going to Estonia this fall, and need to purchase a Salt Water Fly Rod in a #10 weight. Here is what I am looking at:
-Loomis Cross Current Beach Rod 11'3" 10 Weight $545.00US
-Beulah Surf Rod 11' 9/10 Weight $465.00US
-Echo2 Saltwater Fly Rod 9' 10 Weight $279.95US
Does anyone have any comments on these choices??
Tight lines,

Thanks for the input. I may well go with this Rod, in a 9' #10. Any ideas on flyline to match. I like RIO lines. In addition I am looking at picking up a Ross Momentum #6, Saltwater/Spey which is on sale for $275.00. It would pack a wt forward 10 and around 275yds of 30lb backing. Your thoughts?
I see you are located down in the Keys. Fishing been good??

| You really can't go wrong with Ross reels. I have the CLA and have had it out with everything from albacore to king salmon, never had one problem. |

As far as rods, i am familiar with the loomis and the beaulah and know the basics of the echo rods. It sounds like you are looking for a surf type rod. What are you fishing for in Estonia? Is this a Sea Trout rod? I am not familiar with the fisheries over there, but typically in Europe it is either Atlantic Salmon in the fresh water and sea trout in the saltwater.
I think you can't go wrong with loomis a tried and true name and the beaulah rods that i have cast have been good rods. Not as familiar with the echo, but they are designed by tim rajeff who is a well versed and seasoned pro so nd he definitely knows what he is doing. The Scott is also an excellent choice. I am a big time Sage fan, and in that price range you may want to look at the VT2.
As far as reels, the ross is a great reel. Great drag system, durable, no maintenence, no small parts to lose with a good warranty and a good price. That reel is on sale because they discontinued it to bring out a lighter weight version but the drag and functionality is the same.
RIO makes some of the best fly lines. What lines are you looking at? Depending on what you are using it for I can help you out. |

Kory,
First I should clarify what type fishing I will be doing in Estonia. I will be fishing for 5 days, 2 on the ocean and 3 on rivers. The species of fish will be
Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout. I am actually putting together 2 outfits for this trip and future trips. As I live a long way from the ocean, I was going to
use basic equipment for the ocean part, and spend more on the river part.
For the ocean part, I will probably go to the Scott Rod, and Ross reel. The lines I am looking at are either a Rio Salt Water or a Rio Clouser Coldwater fly line. Both will be floating at my guides suggestion.
I am a very big fan of Sage as well. I have a 9' 5wt Z-Axis that is just a fantastic rod. I matched it up with a Lampson Waterworks ULA Force 3 reel, and this makes for a great combination.
My preferences in equipment is:
Rods: Sage up to 8wt and Loomis 10wt and above
Reels: Lampson Waterworks, Hatch and Ross
Flylines: RIO
Each year I target 1 wt of Rod. Last year it was the 5 wt. This year it will be the 8wt. I am looking at a Sage 9 ft /8 TCX. Reel would be either be a Waterworks Lampson Force Saltwater Spey or getting a ULA force 3x
spare spool, and that would handle a 8wt line and 150yds of 20lb. I am a bit nervous about the 150 yds, so may go to a second Ross Reel. -*
I better end this, as its getting long winded. Thanks to all who sent reply s. I think this is a great resource, and look forward to posting more in the future.
Tight lines,

Sounds like you have it pretty well figured out, that should be a sweet setup for the saltwater. Both of the Rio lines you mention are good choices, I would choose the clouser if you are planning on throwing heavvier/bulkier flies and don't need a delicate presentation. The saltwater line would be a better choice for all around fishing.
As far as the 8 weight setup, sounds like a great one as well. The TCX is a sweet rod. It is much lighter than its predecessor TCR series and not quite as stiff so you get a little more feel from it. It still has tremendous power and is a great stick. The lamson and the ross are both excellent choices, can't go wrong with either one.
Good luck on your trip and let us know how it goes! |

Thanks for the reply. I am off to Ontario tomorrow morning for 10 days. I will spending a day with Ian James learning the ins and outs of Carp Fishing on the fly.Should be a blast. report when I return.
One final question: Does anyone have a opinion on the new Lampson Vanquish Reel?? Its suppose to have a braking system 3 times more powerful than any of the other Lampson Reels. Price is way higher though. It looks like Lampson wants to get into the high end market, and compete with Hatch,Abel,Tabor and others. I wold probably look at for 12wt & up for some serious bad boys(shark,Tuna & other heavy weights).
tight lines to all |
