Hi Tom,

ok, there are two waters next to Kitzbuhel (a small pond and a small river) which I would not recommend since they are not flyfishing waters and you rarely even see fish there. I would suggest that you go to Mittersill, 28km from Kitzbuhel and pay a visit to Hotel Braurup, www.braurup.at . There is a bus that goes to this place from Kitzbuhel couple of times a day and you might ask for itinerary at your hotel. Believe me, the waters from this hotel are the best waters of the whole area there

cheers

Hi guys,

there is a very iteresting water opened in Austria (area of Salzburg) 2-3 yrs. ago. This river is called Fuscher Ache and its one of the tributaries of the famous Salzach river. The river flows through the highest mountains of Austria, just beside the mountain Kaprun, in the famous Grossglockner area. Of course, in 2006 and 2007, the river was visited by few curious fisherman only since no rea advertisement was made for it. I went there twice last year and managed to catch some very good trouts (photos will follow soon) and I am going back there in April. This water belongs to the Porsche family and it hasn#t been fished for over 50 yrs. Now, a chain of three-four hotels in the villages nearby the river have managed to collect the money and rent out the river for a 10 year period. It is really unbelievable what monster fish you find there and at least one of those is caught per day. It is full of fish everywhere, a lot of deep pools, waterfalls, fast flowing sections and small streams flowing into it wre you can also fish. The main species are Brown Trout and Brook Char, however the number of huge Rainbows and Graylings has been increased drastically. In the very low part of the river, just before it gets to Salzach, the Danube Salmon and Barbel can also be found.

Guys, this river is excellent for fishing in March and April and then Mid-September till the End of October. That's when the river has its normal water level and flows nicely through the Grossglockner area. From May till mid September, fishing can be done only in the poolsand the shore of the river since the water is very high and fast, from th snow melting in the highest hills of Austria. Honestly, I have been more successful on the high water fishing the shores of the river ad the pools than when the water was low/normal.

For more information you ca go to ww.zacherlbrau.at or just google for Fishing in Fuscher Ache.

Marcel, Troutbone and the others who are often fishing in Germany might find it very convenient. It is very close (0 min drive) to the famous touristic resort for Dutch people, the Zeller See.

Hi,

beginning of April I decided to go to Fuscher Ache, one of the very interesting waters of Salzburg area. The fishing season had just started, the weather was nice but the water still extremely cold. Asked the fishing guide at the hotel about hot spots, flies, fishing in general and the answer was: Graylings are not active, brown trout is still hiding, so the only option was to fish for rainbows and brook trout.

First day I visited therecommended hot spots but beside a 34cm brown trout and two small brooks I was not really successful. I had hooked two huge ranibow but lost them because of the very thin leader.

Next day I went for rainbows, used a thicker leader and the results were better. This time I went to my own hot spots I remembered from last year. The problem was the very fast water and also dirty water from the snowmelt. In addition, there was a new bridge being built so it made the water even more dirty.
However, fishing close to the shore with white streamers was not so bad.
here comes the first rainbow of the day

Then I decided to visit my favourite waterfall, a spot which is never fished by other fisherman since it is not in the recommendation list of the owner:)
It brought me good fish last year so decided to visit it again

5 min later I had the first Waterfall Rainbow:)

and the second

then tried to fish few km above the bridge which was being built where the water was clearer but also faster

few meters down and I had another rainbow

then went to one of my hot spots known as fishing spot "The street". It is called like that just because you can fish from the street, by just dropping the nymph 10cm offshore. Lost two good brooks and one rainbow and finally had a rainbow of the size I wanted, 50cm but thin for its size

and then

another nice one

last day I had couple of more rainbows

the only day when the water got a bit clear in the afternoon

I will be going there again next Monday, this time for a week.

Hi Troutbone,

sorry for the late reply, just came back from my one-week fishing holiday. Will post the photos later:). Hm, most of the rivers I fish belong to different hotels and are fishable by hotel guests only. However, there are also rivers where you can just get a day, three-day or weekly card and wade into them. I have to check about camping possibilities but please provide me with more info:
-What time are you planning to go?
- how far from Munich?
- are you driving and camping with a tent or?

will get back to you with concrete information just I need the above mentioned details since some of those areas have restricted periods for camping

cheers

Hi guys,

I went back to Fuscher Ache two weeks ago and stayed there for a week. The water was good most of the time except for the two very rainy days when fishing was almost impossible.
I had many fishes but didn't make to take pictures of all of them since we were two of us fishing with one camera:)

here are some of the photos

the restaurant in the garden

first rainbow

rainbow 2

third rainbow came just 1 minute after the second one, exactly on the same spot, behind a big rock

my favourite waterfall (too much water)

nice spot but full of small charr

changed the nymph and put a rubber leg prince and one big rainbow was on 5 min later

decided to visit also the small lake which is created from the river but it was boring:). Easy fishing and the huge fishes were not fighting at all:(

day three - decided to fish the fast flowing sections of the river, mainly shallows and hooked couple of brown trouts

day 4 was not bad either

couple of rainbows and brownies

waterfall nr.2 (caught NO fish)

and then came into this fast flowing part. you can see the trees & bushes on the left bank and that was the shelter of huge brown trouts. unfortunately lost 4 very big ones and managed to hook two, one good and one very big one

more fish caught in a pool approximately 50m from the fast flowing section next day

the surrounding area

nice brown caught on size 16 dry fly (although dry fly fishing was nearly impossible)

another one

and my last fish caught on a dry fly while searching for graylings

last day started with a charr

and some more caught as well

It was a good fishing holiday, looking forward to the next one

I just reserved 3 days of fishing at the Hotel Braurup for the middle of July. I was told it is not the best time of year but my schedule only permits this time frame. Do you guys have any suggested waters for this time of year? What fly patterns should I look at tying up before I go?

Hi Kicknsand,

sorry for the late reply but just came back from my short summer holidays. It is amazing how Braurup attracts fishermen from all over the world:). I think that everyone who goes fishing for the first time in Austria goes to Braurup, that was the case with me as well. Well, July is usually not very good because of snowmelt. The mountains around Braurup are very high and usually the snow melts down in July and early August. However, this year we had no summer in Austria. It has been raining for the last two-three weeks almost every day. There were flods in many regions of Austria, so, I don't think there will be any snow melt this year:). Ok, since you're staying three days, it is worth of fishing the best waters. 70% of Braurup waters require minimum 20-30 minutes walk or hike, or even both. To access few of them you have to take a special TAXI to drive you close to the area and then comes the hike:).
Ok, the waters I would recommend to you are:
1. Krimmler Ache part 1 - this is the area where the most beautiful European waterfalls (Krimmler waterfalls are located). There is a fishing shop at Braurup hotel so you ask the guy to call a TAXI for you. After 40 minutes of driving you will be left at Hochtal and the TAXI driver will show you the path you have to take. It is over an hour of walk but you really get to fish in one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. The fish in this river are not so big, you will rarely catch a fish over 40cm but the medium size species bring good fights. There is a lot of char in the river and it is almost everywhere free-casting area. You can use any flies but I would recommend you small dry flies, parachute, ants and blck sedge

2. Hollersbach - very interesting river, the width and the flow differs from kilometer to kilometer. Beautiful river with huge trouts in it. You can fish the whole river incuding the small lake created by it which is called Stausee. This is very close to the Hotel, approximately 10 min drive

3. Salzach - Braurup Hotel has the best sections of one of the best Austrian salmonid rivers "Salzach". Check with the guy from the shop which section is the best. I think you can fish 5 or 6 different sections of Salzach while my favourite ones are Salzach river from Hollerbach (wooden bridge) to Uttendorf (bridge) (FLY ONLY) and Upper Salzach (mixed water)

Ok, fly only rivers is selfexplanatory, you can only fish with a fly rod using artificial flies (streamers are not allowed in some of the waters) and MIXED WATERS means that you can fish with any spin rods as well using spinners, blinkers, twisters etc.

Salzach is not so good in summer so in case the fishing is bad maybe you want to go to one of the lakes. Elisabeth See is 20 min drive from the hotel and it is well known for its capital trouts. The best fly is the black ant size 16 or even smaller.

Here is the fishing folder from Braurup as well

Thank you for the information. I hope the weather will hold out for me while I am there. I could use some time on the rivers. Is it recomended to hire a guide for the waters or are they easy to find with out much effort?

I know that three times a week there is free guiding to Salzach and Elisabethsee for hotel guests. I would suggest that you take a guide for Hollersbach since he knows all the hot spots there and believe me you will be catching monster trouts with a guide on that river. Not everywhere you can find the big ones so for this river it is good to take a guide. I think you would pay 70 EUR for three hours
