|
|
| Soon the action will be heating up on the Salmon River. Word is that the Kings have moved in from the bluewater, to staging areas at the mouths of the larger rivers. Anyone who has never hooked one of these monsters (Mike & Louie) should definitley consider making the trip. The word from my sources is the anticipated return this year will be second to none. We will make our first outing in about two weeks. Stay tuned for weekly updates. |

| hey whippa...what is the earliest that you have gotten steelies (not the summer run) ---- i am referring to the steelies that come in with or behind the kings?...also - have you ever swung flesh patterns in the fall?? looking to try to get some steelies on some streamer/flesh patterns before water gets too cold and i have to stay on the eggs and stones. |

|
|
Steel starts to show up in fishable numbers around the first week of October. Flesh flies become effective when the first push of Kings die after spawning. I have had the best luck fishing flesh patterns directly behind strainer trees with a carcass hanging from them. I have watched steelies actually knaw on the dead salmon during these occasions. A well placed cast in the seam of the above mentioned strainer and hold on tight.
The last 2 weeks of August is where it's at if you want hot, silver kings with no other anglers on the water. Coho's are my favorite (much more aggresive to the fly) and they are a little harder to find, once you locate a pod the action will be fast and they are much prettier than the kings. Once Labor day hits the circus comes to town for about six weeks. Then it is steelhead solitude once again. |

I wonder why the great lakes kings run in the fall
They got the fish to start stocking those lakes from sea run fish on the west coast and all of the kings in Alaska all the way down to california run from mid may to mid june or the first part of July or even both months depending on the location. I do know however that the silver there run the same tim as here about. Kodiak gets chrome silvers from early august through october and sometimes till thanksgiving. I also hope you get some chrome kings jeremy, the difference in fighting and table quality for all salmon between chrome and dark fish is night and day |

Glad to see a little chatter about the upcomming fishing festivities set to begin in a few short weeks! Now that I am back in NY, I can't wait to stretch out some line on some salamoooo. Looking forward even more to being able to share some stories/laughs/screaming reels with others who make it up here...Jeremy, Fisherboy (loved your story, by the way), Mike (great screen name...basskake ) , Louie, PeteD, any and all who make the trip.
Headrush....got any other plans, or is it back to the links?

i know...glad your back in ny..can't wait for some laughs and screaming reels with you guys this season...i know there will be many of both..
PS. the biggest laugh will be when fisherboy hooks his first salmon...he thinks that he has reached the pinnacle of fly fishing after that relatively little rainbow he got here in maine..he says "BRING 'EM On" --- instead, he should be thinking.."I HOPE THEY DON"T PULL ME IN"...
the plan is already in the making for an august 17th ish trip to ny for some potential chrome kings...i know headrush is talking to whippa and he called me last night and said he is buying a plane ticket to syracuse...i am in...we will have a blast...keep an eye on the fish and let us know when a few of them start rear their ugly heads in the rivers and tribs...if we can';t find any kings...we can always adjust and go trout fishing...ausable or delaware...or whatever..
get ready for rhode island in the month of september....we will all do a trip down there for the albacore...if you like the stripers your gonna love these fish..especially when pursuing them on foot...it's fast and furious...if you can trick one with your fly...your guaranteed to see backing and LOTS of it! they rip. |

| Austin, Make sure all your gear is in excellent working condition, especially your reel. These fish are really hard on your equipment. Looking forward to putting you onto your first King, Coho, Steelhead or lake run brown, whichever takes your fly first! Can't wait. |

Looking forward to it! I haven't been able to do any real fishing in weeks, so I have been tourturing myself by watching some of the vids. Should be a lot of fun to hook up with everybody over the next few months.
The icing on the cake WILL be getting Austin into his first King. They rip so hard your mind shuts down for the first few minutes. That is the funniest part about it!!! what goes on after that sometimes doesn't even matter.
Word on the street, and in the paper, is that this has been the best year yet for Charter captains out on the lake. The flows in the river have been managed completely differently this year, too, with average flows remaining over 400cfs. The norm over the past few summers has been less than 200cfs. Who knows what will happen, but it sure looks good!

Austin,
for egg patterns use glo bug yarn or estaz. Any flouresent color. Chartruse, hot pink, blue etc... tie up a lot of comet patterns, mostly in flour. orange for startes. Bring some size 6 to 12 black stones with flour. blue flashback and olive caddis larva. WF floating line will work fine. If you have a runniing line bring that as well. Won't be long now!!! |
