hey guys-
im going up there for the last week in august, staying at lily bay state park, will have my 12ft aluminium boat and my fly rod with me...whats good for fishing around that time, and what are your go to fly's for there and then?
Go to flies would be streamers (smelt patterns) such as Grey Ghosts and my favorite .. Black Ghosts. Also, big leachy patterns are good. Big terrestrial dry flies and stimulator flies as well as a handful of different types of brown and black caddis flies. Can't go wrong with some standard nymphs too such as big stoneflies in brown and black, copper johns, and flashback pheasent tails. You are going to be right on moosehead lake and its not uncommon to see risers on the lake and salmon rolling early morning and evening .. So, fishing the lake can be productive at the right times of day. There are plenty of rivers around that section and you won't be too far from The West Branch of The Penobscot River (via the golden Road) ... Late August often provides great fishing there. I would highly recommend a day or 1/2 day with my good friend Greg Bostater who guides on the west branch of the penobscot .. He can dial you into the fishery there .. and though there are wadable spots and good wadable spots its a monster river with monster water and a raft like he has definately puts you in a "game" that simply can't be played from foot or even a conventional drift boat. Also, check out your map and perhaps consider the kennebec River. Good luck. Beautiful country up there at Lilly Bay State Park .. Watch out for moose (seriously). Have fun.
