I have a friend from kodiak who is now working for the park service in dry tortugas national park in florida and invited me down. Anyone have experience fly fishing this area?

I specifically would like to go down for tarpon. However this friend is mostly a gear fisherman and says he targets tarpon in 20 to 30 feet of water. Now all the fly fishing i have seen is flats for tarpon but i imagine with a good sink tip or something it would be possibly to fly fish for them in deeper water?

Talk to some lower keys fishing guides, mention the tortugas, and watch their reaction. It is a place that many of them would love to be able to explore, if they haven't already. I can't say first hand, as I have never even taken the fast cat out there, but I have heard that there are some excellent fly fishing opportunities to be had. I have heard that there are some fishable flats, as well as endless deep water opportunities.

As far as fishing them in deeper water goes, it is not going to be the glamor sight fishing that everyone is looking for, but get the right fly in front of the right fish the right way, and I'll guarantee it will get your cold ass blood flowing...he he Enjoy your trip
