November is a great time for fly fishing in Florida. Miami area is great because you are in a central location where you can fish a number of different places depending on the weather. If its really nice and the wind is not to bad and the fish are around, you can fish biscayne bay (there are a few wading spots, but not many because most of the flats are really soft) .. however, there are a couple wading spots. And, then you have the various bridges around biscayne bay where catching tarpon and snook is possible. Then, if the weather and wind really kicks up .. you can find refuge and fish for baby tarpon and snook on "the trail" (aka rte 41/tamiami trail) which runs from miami to naples florida. This is pretty cool because you are basically in the everglades and rte 41 is a 2 lane road that cuts through the everglades. And, being in Miami its a real quick shot to the upper keys (key largo - islamorada) and there are virtually unlimited fishing opportunities on those keys (especially for bonefish, permit, barracuda, sharks) ... I think DIY is totally possible, infact I know it is .. but it is very difficult if you don't at least have a base of knowledge to start with. And Florida has a TON of water .. so, you could waste a lot of time trying to figure out spots and how to fish for different species with very limited or no success. I would recommend hiring a guide for 1 day or even a half day trip because a guide will be able to help you understand the types of water where tarpon, snook and sharks will be and how to fish for them etc... I have 2 guides in that region that I know well and would recommend.
1. Capt. Raul Montero - http://www.biscaynebayfishing.com/ - Raul is born and raised in Miami and has fished the miami area (biscayne bay and lower keys) all of his life. He is definately dialed into the snook, tarpon, bonefish, permit, cuda and shark fishing in biscayne bay, flamingo and lower keys. 1 day with Raul would help your DIY efforts big time.
2. Marshall DeMott - http://www.flyanglersguide.com/ - Marshall has been living down in the Naples area (on the other side of Rte 41) for several years now. He works at Mangrove Outfitters and does walking guide trips on the Tamiami Trail. I would imagine that you and he could perhaps meet on the trail somewhere between Miami and Naples and fish for a few hours.
So, give these guys a call -- Even if you did 1/2 day with each ... it would be time well spent and help you tremendously in your DIY efforts. Raul fishes all over biscayne bay and is able to put his flats boat in the water at virtually any ramp around the bay .. so, fishing close to where you are staying was important to you .. I am sure Raul could accomodate that. Good luck! Have fun. Hope this helps.
