Funny title, I love it! .. I know exactly what you mean. Check out This
Video of when I was fishing down there for snook a few years ago with friends Dave Teper and Capt. Kevin Mihailoff. You will notice a couple things. First, watch how the snook follows all the way to the boat, where I can literally do no more but twitch the fly a couple inches before I run out of room. And then, watch as I embarrasingly trout set that same fish and blow it! I think it was, infact I know it was, on this very trip that I swore to myself "I will never trout set again" - but, I still do from time to time (ok a lot:)) ... Anyway, just wanted to share this with you. And I am curious to what other guys say or recommend to do and for flies. As far as Snook go, I have caught a few but not enough to really give advise. I do know that the general flies I use down there are enrico purple/black mullet or bunker type patterns and I have even caught fish on clousers and smaller patterns such as glass minnows. Good luck. I will shoot this to Marshall who fishes a lot down there for the snook and see if he can help out. Other guys like dave and Marcel etc.. have also spent a lot of time fly fishing for snook - and may have some insight and tips for us.
Cortez,
jeremy's correct again. I fish Snook most every day and believe me, they beat me up their fair share of the time. That's what makes them great game fish.
Snooks Got Game!
Because they've humbled me so often....I can tell you that you need to change your psych on your retrieves....meaning, you need to MAKE them want to chase it. Litterally, you need to give your retrieve so much zip, pizzaz, and variety and you must make the fish chase and then strike. Of course, use Marabou, flash, and contrast in your patterns, but it's your retrieve that you need to concentrate on.
Hey, good question. Thanks for posting and good luck!

PS.. The fly patterns are a whole other topic depending on waters and seasons, etc...Tarpon are a whole other story and regimen depending on lots of factors too varied to go into now...
MY USUAL DEAL LIKE LETS SAY IF A BIG PIKE IS STALKING MY FLY IS TO START SLOW AND WHEN HE IS ON IT I INCEASE THE SPEED OR LEGNTH OF MY STRIP FOR LIKE 2 OR 3 STRIPS THEN GIVE A SUDDEN STOP AND THAT USUALY TRIGGERS AN EXPLOSION BUT LIKE I SAID THAT SNOOK JUST LAUGHED AT ME
Great suggestions so far. Snook can be super stubborn sometimes, even if everything seems perfect. Mixing up the retrieve is a great idea. Try fast, slow, erratic, and in between. Try using both light and dark patterns...for example, a light one being white and chartreuse a dark one being black and olive. Being that it's a spillway, it could be that the fish are just super duper educated from being fished a lot. Try fishing it when that spillway is really pumpin after a heavy rain, or if it's in a safe enough area, give it a go at night...black flies of course!
The snook that are cruising the beach are for me the toughest ones to catch.
Usually they will ignore my flies, sometimes they will investigate and follow and on vary rare occasions they will actually go for the fly.
I feel when there are more than one Snook about the competition might drive one to nail the fly before his buddies can get to it.
Beachpatrol with Marshall
My succsesrate on the beach Snook is low since I am not as fortunate as Marshall to go after them every day, still catching one from the beach is very rewarding.
After several shots this fish just went crazy for the fly.
I find it easier to catch Snook near structure where the water is a bit deeper.
If I come across a pile of rocks or riprap, seawalls - pilings whatever structure than I will blindcast in the general area and probe the waters thoroughly.
Fishing past sunset, retrieved the gurgler along the rocks.
Inlets are also favorite places for me to go after Snook, I often use a Teeny line with a floating fly like a crease fly on such places.
