I went to the stream late this afternoon for some
shiner fishing.
The weather was typical fall like, sunshine with a
mix of rainshowers and a strong wind.
Blackberry and hop
It was obvious that the seasons end was near, the summer
flowers where gone and the leafes where coloring.
My shiner honey hole was completely empty.
On my last visit I saw one cormorant there and suspected that
the whole gang had cleared my stream out.
The waterlevels where once again very low, maybe the fish had just
gone to deeper water somewhere ....
At one spot I managed at least a decent Dace on a copper John.
All the good spots I visited where void of fish.
My next catch was a Roach that surely measured 2 inches.
Below the weir of the watermill I spotted some rising fish so
I fished for a while with the dry fly.
According to the hits I got on the dry it seemed to be very small stuff.
I decided to switch tactics, I tied on a sinking leader with a black zonker streamer.
The pool below the mill would surely have the one or other yellow perch in it.
After some casts I suddenly was into a fish, a big one.
When I saw a big white belly shoot away my first guess was that I had hooked a pike, when I saw a brown flank with spots I knew it was trout.
The trout took me all over the pool but the leader was strong enough to pull out a horse so I just let the fish go.
I beached the fish and took a few pics, it was a massive brown trout.
So despite the rough start my day had a silver lining in the end.
Nice sky - reminds me of this quote:
"Every dark cloud has a silver lining, but lightning kills hundreds of people each year who are trying to find it"
I believe this is my best brown ever and that from that little ditch back home. |

Allthough I did not measure the fish I estimate the fish
between 50...55cm, roughly 21 inches.
The stream I fish is stocked with trout and usually the meatfisherman
will clear the stream out well in advance of season's end.
Seems like they forget this one and I am pretty sure that the one or the
other is still lurking somewhere.
Still a couple of weeks to go so who knows what might happen |
