Anyone fish with a Winston BII - MX rod? I just picked up a 9 1/2 ft 7 weight for a Belize trip...any tips, or suggestions? Thanks Smile

The BII-MX or boron II MX is a killer rod especially for saltwater. It isn't as stiff as many of the other premium brand rods out there like Sage or G loomis, but it has enough backbone to punch a fly into the wind. Although it is stiff especially for a winston, it has a much more progressive action and a slightly softer tip which allows you to feel the load of the rod on shorter casts and also allows for more delicate presentations which can be essential for bonefish. I have not fished the 9 1/2 7 weight but have fished the 9 foot 8 and 9 weights mostly around NY for stripers and they excelled in those situations. I think the 9 1/2 7 weight would be perfect for bonefish although if you get into seriously windy conditions you might be undergunned. As far as the fish go though it is a great match for bonefishing. I probably wouldn't overload the rod because it isn't extremely stiff, but I might put a more aggressive taper fly line on there (which most bonefish lines are). Hope that helps. Enjoy the new toy!

Rich,

Did you test cast it before you bought it? This is generally the best way to know if it will work for YOU and YOUR casting style.

I own two Winston BIIMXs and a 6 and a 7 wt both 9footers. So I can't speak on behalf of the 9.5 footer...

I use the 6wt as my primary streamer rod with a Rio 200gr sink tip for trout and salmon here in Maine. It is easy to "load and go" and cover alot of water effectively.

The 7wt I have used on steelhead in the Great Lakes, and Stripers in the Northeast. It is a powerful rod that delivers well in windy conditions... I have used mainly with sink tip lines, and for big water indicator nymphing. I havent used it set up with the type of line you'll be fishing for bones, but I'm sure it will get the job done well. It is a fairly stiff rod so you may have to go easy on your drag and hooksets if fishing light tippet for those Bones.

Good luck in Belize! Hope to see a fish tale from warm waters when you return...
