Fly Fishing

Hey Y'all!

I'm going to be in Ogunquit, ME in mid July and I'm looking for a guide out of that area for a half day of fishing. I've done the stripers and blues thing a lot recently and I'd love to target some other species. My DREAM is to go out for Bluefin but I'd also go the freshwater route if anyone knew of something spectacular around there. Anyone have any great ideas on guides, rivers etc... Are tuna even up that far in July? Any bonito or albies?
Also, is anyone interested in joining me for a half day? Thanks in advance!

I am from Maine, so perhaps I can help a little bit. Ogonquit is a sea town in southern Maine. I actually fish stripers and chase bluefin down that way a fair amount of time. A "spectacular" freshwater river is, for all practical purposes, out of the question for 1/2 day - especially in mid July. For freshwater, you'd want to go outside the immediate vicinity of Oqonquit during that time of year. Bluefin tuna and stripers, however, in that region is during that time is a very good bet. The 2 guides that you would want to consider are Capt. Eric Wallace and Capt. John Ford. Eric's, specialty is sight fishing stripers with a flats boat. Maine flats fishing is really something special because of the crystal clear water opportunities and the giant tide swings - making for a real dynamic flats fishing experience. John Ford is recognized as "the man" for targeting Maine Bluefin on the fly. Both Eric and John fish southern Maine depending on where the bluefin and strip bite is best. Often, that ends up being in the general vicininty of Ogonquit. Put it this way, I am from Portland Maine - and do a lot of fly fishing down that way for sea run brown trout, bluefin, stripers etc.. depending on the bite and the time of year. It's really just a quick boat or car ride south of Portland, Maine. Here's a beautiful bluefin that Capt. John Ford and Cathy Beck landed in that general region. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Ya, No Kidding! A Maine BFT on the fly has been one of my "white whales" for some time now! To date, I've been so close ... but "no cigar"

Hi Fisherone,
I grew up in Ogunquit and now live up the road in Wells. Stay at the Beachmere Inn and you'll wake up to stripers under your feet. Not much for "spectacular" trout fishing, however the Ogunquit River and the Merriland River in Wells have state stocked browns and brookies.
John Ford and Eric Wallace are some of the better know guides on the salt and you couldn't go wrong with them. Scott Howard is another great guide. I too guide and would love to take you out. The tuna start to show in July and may take a good boat ride to find them. They move in closer towards the end of the summer. Last year we had them right on Ogunquit Beach in October and into November. I run a Par 3 golf course in Wells, stop in and talk fish'n. Oh yeah, lots of good local info at the Eldredge Bro's Fly Shop. Good luck!
