After reading several articles on tube flies I'm considering buying a kit and tying some my self. My question is do these things really fool the trout? Do they work as well as some articles say they do? Some of these tube flies just don't look as realistic as the regular flies I tie at my bench and I don't want to waste my time or money. Any help?
Na they don't work. Just kidding. Where tubes shine is in having a long fly with a short shanked hook so that the fish has less leverage with which to throw the hook. As far as realism one can pretty much tie up anything you want on a tube or regular hook, its all up to the tier. All you need to get is an adapter for holding the tubes which will attach to your vice and then some tubes and hooks. If you have tying materials then you are good to roll.
