Wow, sight-fishing is what I live for. Snook on the beach are as tough as they come; spooky, shy, won't eat, rejet your fly, BUT
When you get it all right, sun at your back, clear calm water, the best cast...then it comes down to the fly pattern. Too bright= they may spook, Too big or too small= they reject it.
I carry a box of assorted patterns and switch often during the times when I get rejections. I think a match-the-hatch style of tying will be your best bet. If you buy them, I'd suggest #4 DT, Puglisis in assorted shades, Tom Shadley's "Lightbulb" and "Tantrum". I don't know why a small, all white Deceiver wouldn't be a good choice either. All white is a good bet. Just a few strands of flash. Snook are monochromatic, they only see flash, black and white, greys, movement's the key. I had three shots at good-sized Snook today...none attacked the fly. Match the hatch. or, unmatch the hatch with a small shrimp or crab. |
