Welcome to Fliesandfins.com! Being a new fly fisher is, in many respects, better than being a good fly fisherman! Its very difficult to ever replace or reconstruct the feeling that anyone gets when they trick their very first fish on the fly. Certainly, each and every fish after that is a little gem and story in and of itself. But, the first time for anything .. is always special. With that said, here are some tips that seem to work in lots of place.

1. Get a fly rod, fly ree and floating fly line
2. Get a couple leaders that are appropriate for the fish you are fishing
3. Buy a couple flies (or tie them)
4. Saltwater Fish eat meat = baitfish patterns = can't go wrong with a clouser
5. Freshwater fish = bugs + meet = wooly bugger (represents both)
6. Not sure what you are fishing for - so let's assume freshwater fish
7. If fishing in river - walk upstream to you find fishy water.
8. Cast or get the wooly bugger in the water how ever you can. the goal is to fish the wooly bugger exactly as you would fish a spinning with a lure.
9. So, just start FISHING! don't worry about what everyone else is saying and doing .. if you are a fisherman who has fished before, rely on your own gut and observations and find your own fish. Ultimately, you will come to this place anyway .. so start now.
10. If you are in saltwater. Do the same. Keep the flies super simple (bob clouser and lefty pretty much nailed it with the CLOUSER MINNOW and the LEFTY DECEIVER. they can (for all practical purposes) catch every fish that swims in the ocean. It's really only a matter of hook size.

Bottom Line: Obviously, there are many complexities that others on this site understand and could help you with. But, the goal as a first timer is to HAVE FUN! GET OUTDOORS! GET OFF THE COMPUTER! MEET PEOPLE! HAVE FUN! it's only fishing and its supposed to be fun and relaxing and a learning experience. So, we are all learning all the time - because there are 26,000 species of fish worldwide. To date, not sure that anyone is, has been or will ever be an expert on each and every one of those fish. So, looking at it from that perspective - we are are learning and trying to catch or "first fish" ... in one way or another. Again, these recommendations are just a STARTING POINT! By no means is any of it fact, true, or the "end all be all." There are 6k+ other crew members who might also have some insight for you! .. but, no matter what -- have fun! Good luck! Let us know how you do!

Go to a fly shop and get what the guides there recommend. They are out on the water most days and will be able to show you how to rig for nymphing and dry flies. When you don't see any bugs on the water you should be nymphing. When you see bugs on the surface, switch to a dry fly that matches color, size and shape. Look at a hatch chart for the month, this will be the most likely insect that is coming off the water. Most streams have more than one insect that hatches at the same time of year. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Guys at the fly shop are very helpful. And no, I am not a guide.

Hey thanks for the info, so the first time fly fishing was really fun. I put on a wooly bugger to start out had a hit on it, then actually hooked one and as i went to net him he spit the hook Sad, then i tried a yellow sulfer and bang got one on. Boy that fight was amazing and really fun, i think im hooked. Due to the crick being fished out and not re stocked yet i did pretty good. Smile Palnning on hitting Pike Run tomorow, uhoh Fish fevor!!!
