|

Hello,
I started fly fishing a year ago and I was just given a medium fast 6 weight Scott A3906/4 as a gift. I am heading to the Florida panhandle this weekend and want to try saltwater fly fishing for the first time. Hopefully it will be an oil free trip.
Will this rod be capable of handling spanish, reds, jacks, etc.., or would I be fighting a losing battle? On the Scott website it does not mention this rod as a saltwater rod but I was wondering if it really made any difference?
Also, was wondering if I really need a stripping basket. Never used one but it just seems like it would get in the way. Normally I fish on the jetty so I dont have to worry about the current playing with my line after I strip it in.
Thanks for the advice. If I am successful I'll try to post some pictures. |

| should be fine for spanish, bluefish, redfish. Not so sure about jacks though heh. Most that we see up in this area are pretty big. |

I have to agree Jacks are more of a ten weight affair but the others are a ball on a six.
The thing is you need more backing and you are throwing much larger wind resistant flies to those jacks. |

| I caught a sizable Jack yesterday on a 6 wt and had no trouble. The reel and amount of backing are more important than the rod. The 6 wt is adequate for what you are likely to encounter fishing on your own unless you wil be throwing large and/or weighted flies. |
