I have heard many stories on what size, and weight of fly you can use for your rod. I have a 7/8 wt. rod and I am skeptical of what fly weight and size I should use. Any suggestions and how I can determine this?

The rod shouldn't determine the size of fly to use-the fish will do that for you!

That is true most of the time, but down here the specks like big poppers and 1/0-2/0 clousers! Now a six weight is a fine speck rod, but is in no way able to handle those flies at the distance that is required to catch the fish. When I first started fly fishing I was told to choose my rod according to the flies I was trowing not by the fish I was trowing them at. But that does'nt always work either cause I can throw a tarpon fly with my 8wt, but It makes more sense to use a 12 because the size of the fish.
