the years keep passing and year after year all my maine salt water buds rent a house on marthas vineyard for a week during the marthas vineyard derby. every year, i seem to be somewhere else and keep backing out of the invites. i was threatened to get a beating this year if i did not go...this week for these guys is like the pinnacle of existance. i hear the stories from the previous year for 51 weeks straight..."last year we got 80 albies, you should have been there.....two years ago paul had 2 albies on before we were even rigged up..." every year they say, "you better go this year!" and every year i say,"i am definately going this year."

so - they are going for the week leaving tomorrow. i was looking at my schedule and was able to squeeze in sunday monday and tuesday morning. that was until Ophelia ran up the coast. then i was thinking about throwing in the towel again this year.

then i get the call tonight about an hour ago..."you're in right?" i respond,"it's a little rough out on the vineyard isn't it?"...."don't worry about it - you will be fine."

ok....so i say to my wife..."honey, you remember how i was telling you about the marthas vineyard derby...." before i could finish she says, "all i am saying is that you better be back for tuesday at 6pm for our meeting with finn's priest." finn's baptism is on sunday and we gotta meet with nuns and priests and all that stuff...

so - i am off - fly rod is ready - albie flies and fluorocarbon. meeting all the boys from maine at 7am driving to woods hole mass - putting the 4 wheel drive vehicles on the ferry at noon and we should be casting on the vineyard by 2ish.

i am excited to check out the scene. these guys have been doing it for a long time and they are dialed in. they got the 4 wheel drive trucks, the beach permits to drive on the beach and they know the island like the back of their hand. it's also cool to participate in a tournament that has been going on for 60 years. i know it will be late nights of partying, lots of laughs, early mornings and all day on the beaches...

hopefully i find my albie and who knows - maybe you will see my name on the derby boards. a long shot...but hey its fishing and you just never know.

you can check out the marthas vineyard derby stats at
http://www.mvderby.com/

look on the left and you will see the current rankings of biggest fish caught on shore and from boat and also the total numbers and weight of bluefish, striped bass, bonito and albacore.

cya....

ps - if i can find an internet connection on the island - i will post an update and let you know how things are panning out.

Threatened a beating if you are not going to Martha's Vineyard?
You can threaten me any day than. Just red a report about the Vineyard
on Tidalfish and can only say it is very pretty down there.
Reminds me a bit of the Danish Baltic coast, good luck down there.

Several of us on flies and fins were wondering if Finn's Baptisim will be taking place at Shawmut?
