Hi,

That time of year can be epic in Montauk. We had a party there last year and it was the first time that I got a chance to visit Montauk, NY on foot. Amanda Switzer is a great guide out there and she wrote up some good information last year for shore fishing the area, there is a map too. Alex, boz and I fished from shore and there pods of bay anchovies (i think thats what they were) drifting up and down the beaches around the lighthouse, very close to shore. We would stay with the bait and sure enough every so often a few bass would come tearing through the pod of bait. So, there is absolutely some great shore fishing available. Drive around, look for bait, birds and fish and fisherman. All the people we met out there, were way cool and super helpful. For flies, I'd bring bay anchovie patterns, sand eel patterns, rhody flatwings of various sizes, clousers, deceivers and gurglers. Perhaps bring a floating and intermediate line .. 8/9 weight is just fine. Here are a couple comments from facebook friends

1. "Shelter Island Is always worth a shot! also Fly Fishing in Salt Water Magazine, July/August 2010 has a Northeast Striper guide. It breaks down areas and times."

2. "just read a GREAT article about pro fisherman Bill Wetzel surf fishing Montauk in August. A must read. Go to surfcastersjournal.com for the article"

And here is a map and some information that Amanda wrote up for the party last year. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun!

In September and October, the surf fishing explodes in Montauk. There is good fishing all season on the surf, anything from sight fishing to fishing the rocky shores on the south side of The Point. As the days get shorter and the water cools off a bit, the fish start to pin the bait along the shores of the Atlantic ocean in Montauk, and thats when the fun starts. There are SO many great places to fish, so easy to get to, others involve walking for miles to get to that special rock, that only the die hard, devovted locals know about. Either way, during the months of September, October and even through out November, the shores under and around the Point are extremely productive.

thats awsome jeremy more than i could have hoped for, have contacted amanda to see if it is possible to fish a day or 2 with her. that map helps immensly seeing we have such a long drive (12hours) and short time going to help cut down the research time and hunting acesses.

The last 3 days we have had lots of stripers, blues and albies blitzing all around Montauk Point. It should only get better as we go into October.

You should carry a large selection of bay anchovies, epoxy flies and crease flies as the fish are usually chowing down on small bait.

Make sure you are wearing korkers while fishing the surf or else you will be very limited in the areas you can fish.
