Hi there,
I'll have a one day trip to Isla Blanca this january. I just read a lot about it, but couldn't find any use ou thrustfull information about flies to be used over there for babies. Each website says something different. And since tarpon isn´t a easy fish to find down here in Brazil, I'm not sure what to tye for them. I've had great sucess at Holbox with white EP baitfishs and orange and red, red and yellow, and other citric collors seaducers tyed on 2/0 811 TIEMCO hooks.
Does anybody knows which flies turns these Isla Blanca tarpon on? Should I go for the same patterns?
Many thanks,
Caio

Hi Kyle:
First of all if you go to Isla Blanca, think that you can have fun not just with Babies ´till 50 pounds, you also could fish for Permit, Snook and bonefish. Is one of my destination. I was there this August and caught 4 Tarpon and 2 permit in one day fishing.
So OK, if you want flies for Isla Blanca tarpon, go straight ahead with a black death in coackroach style, i mean not a rabbit black death, you need to use red haclke and black feathers, that´s tarpon candy. 2/0 is OK. And you don´t need to go over 40lbs with the shock tippet. For Permit a WHITE rag head crab is mandatory. For snook bring some olive flies and a white gummy minow, maybe you can use EP for this.
If you have any doubt let me know and good luck. You´ll remember me, Isla Blanca is Super Grand Slam territory. And fishing is not like open sea Holbox rolling tarpon.

Right on man. Thanks for all the info Cristián! I was there last july just for permit with small raghead crabs. Saw a lot of them, even huge schools, sometimes, three in an 100 meters range, got one follow, but no hook up. Since I was going to Holbox after, didn´t fished for tarpon, that's why I,m focusing on it right now. I read january is not the best time for permit, but I don't know in fact wha't that means (if I could fish for all day long and not see one bare fish, opposite to what happens in june/july, or if it is just not as good as this time, do you happen to know? Of course, Permit is always Permit, got my first one in Cuba, on my first cast, and casted to dozen in Isla Blanca in july and didn't got any, ). I'll tye this tarpon candy flie and check it out. Would you split the day this time of year and try for both? Many Thanks. Regards, Caio.

You will have a blast,I was there September of '09 for Nine days of fishing. If there was One fly that we used more then the others it was the Tarpon toad colors Chartruse,Purple,Brown. It also worked on Some snook. I'm a total noobie to fly fishing. That was my first time fly fishing in saltwater.Whole lot of fun. Check it out...
