Today I finished the trout season in Germany with my fishing buddy Joop.
Officially the season on our river ended mid October but since I
had to leave for Naples FL October 3rd. it was my last shot
at the trout.

Our recent visits to the river only yielded shiners in various sizes
so on this day we decided to go to a place where we would be absolutely sure to catch trout.
We picked the pool of the fisher king contest behind the watermill as our fishing grounds.
We had witnessed that the worm brigade performed pretty badly during the contest so we where sure plenty of fish where left in the pool.
The fishing prospects where good but the weather was bad.
In the driving rain we launched small twisters in the coffee colored waters
of the pool.

Besides the lack of clarity we had to bother with the countless
leaves that had fallen in the river.
Despite the adverse conditions it soon was obvious that the pool was stacked with trout.
We caught one trout after the other and missed loads of
fish.
After an hour or so action tapered down, the fish where on to us.

We noticed that lot’s of fish followed the twister, went for the tail and consequently missed the hook.
We thought fly-fishing would be a far better method to catch the trout due to better line control and the possibility to retrieve the lure slower.
It turned out to be the ticket to get even more trout.

Brown trout on the streamer.

We had countless following fish that decided at the last moment to inhale the streamer.
Now we knew why the rest of the river had so few trout, they where all stocked in the pool.
This kind of fishing was too easy, luckily this happened only once
a year during a week or two.
Due to the rains we where the only fishermen at the pool.
After two hours of rain the skies cleared and the sun broke through, to bad we had to leave because of Joops other engagements.
We had a ball though catching dozens of trout on light spinning and Flyfishing
outfits.

Sunshine after the rain, autumn crocuses near the pool.

A little trout on the streamer.

So I ended my last trout-fishing day in Germany catching tons of trout.
Hopefully I will have equal success when I am fishing in Naples FL next from next Tuesday on.
If I get the chance (I think I will) I will file reports from Florida then.
