|
|
So I've been doing some research on flies that might come in handy for me to tie for my upcoming trip in March to SW Florida. We will be spending one day in Key Largo which as fate has it might offer me a chance to fanaggle a bonefish. That said I really don't care what I catch if anything. So I've started to tie stuff like Clousers (Chartreuse) and Crazy Charley's. Anyone have any other fly recommendations?
Thanks,
Alex
Come onnnnnnn March. Man I can't wait. Until then it's Great Lakes Steelhead, Lake Trout and Browns... when I'm not chasing pike or musky... until those close. |

On my last FLA trip, wich was in St Petersburg I did ok on #4 to #2 clousers in pink and white and tan and white; but the tye that was getting attacked by every thing in the ocean was a fly that a local gave me for an exchange of tipet material. It was a small tye maybe 6-8# had a marabou tail with an opalesant chenille body and bead chain eyes tyed with chartruse thread, almost like a pearl colored wooly bugger. I had used i for three days but lost it to a dinner plate size shadow that nailed it and broke me off before I had time to react. I had also caught small 15 to 18 " gag groupers around jetties and inlets off of shrimp tyes .

| what dann said above is perfect. but you could also tie numerous sizes of crab patterns and shrimps flies. you could be creative with it by including small bites of red true blue hints of green, and pinks and yellows do great. |

Guys:
Thanks so much for your help thus far. I'll definitely be tying flies with your help and recommendations. Looking forward to tying for this trip. I love being creative. I'll tie in bits of marabou and the like here and there.

Hey Alex,
Check out S.S. Flies here advertised on the right. This guy ties for some of the best guides in the Keys and he has a terrific crab that's a must-have for Bones and Permit.
give me a shout about more specific patterns for Naples area Trail Tarpon and estuary Snook. |

Marshall:
Thanks for the tip. I looked at S.S and I must say they are beautiful. I'll be e-mailing you shortly regarding the "Trail patterns". As as matter of fact I think our hotel is right off of Tamiami.

keep in touch...call when you are coming down. I fished the Trail the other day...a dozen Snook, mostly small, a dozen Ladyfish, one Red and one Catfish. Sadly, I didn't hook a Tarpon. |

Been doing more research recently. I have a fairly old school book that I borrowed from a friend. It's the Saltwater Fishing Bible. Of course it mentions the usual suspect species like bones, permit, snook, tarpon and 'cuda. For some reason... ladyfish seem very appealing. if I were to target them I was thinking of my 6wt or would the 8 wt be better just in case? Okay... that question and answer seem real obvious. Are these guys active in March?

| yes, Ladyfish on a lighter rod are a handful and for lots of folks...all they need for a pull. They are active and around here most of the year! |
