Here it is .. simplified.

1. Rod, Reel and Line should match. For example - if you have a 6 weight fly rod = 6 weight fly reel = 6 weight fly line.

2. Start with Weight forward floating fly line

3. Leader/Tippet - This seems to confuse alot of people. Just think of it like this. It would be impossible to tie a fly to the fly line - as it is way too thick - and of course, even if you could the fish would see it. So, you add leader and tippet - which is basically just like regular fishing line. You typically add 9 feet of this to the end of the fly line and then attach the fly. So what is leader and what is tippet? A leader that you buy in a package is typically 9 feet long .. as you tie flies to it and it gets naturally shorter with every fly you tie -- you don't want to have to add a whole new leader -- so you simply add "tippet" to the leader to get it back to the 9 foot length. Typically leaders are tapered - meaning that the beginning section that attaches to the fly line is thicker/stronger and the tip of the leader that attaches to the fly is thinner and not as strong. Think of the tippet as the thinner part of the leader that attaches to the fly .. and when your leader starts to get too short -- you add tippet.

Bottom Line: Your rod should match reel and your line should match rod and reel. Put the fly line through the guides of the rod. Attach a leader that you buy in a package to the end of the fly line. Attach a fly to the other tippet end of the leader (thinner). Start fishing.

Good Luck.

Hey SAMBO, I am pretty new to fly fishing as well...most of what jeremy wrote is balls on from what I have learned so far in my quest...I am about a year deep. One thing I would suggest though, is practicing casting a bit before actually heading out to the water to fish...helps to get some timing developed and safer to do so without a hook attached.

tight lines

If you whant to lurn, have a look on you tube; there are a lot of video about casting....there are also plenty of good books; but the best is to improve yourself whith the help of a friend or a guide.

Spend the money and go out with a local guide for a day. You will be amazed at what you learn and it will shorten your learning curve by miles.
