Fly Fishing

Been reading good things so far about this line up, and had the chance to cast the 7wt switch rod at a convention in Philly, but not fished. Shot line like crazy , but to tell the truth I wasn't really paying attention to all the little details. Has anyone here had some real time with one of these. I'm looking at either the Beulha 7/8 switch or the Access 7wt switch, both are the same price but one thing in the Access favor is I have an Orvis dealer right down the road if I have any problems or complaints, and I think their made in Vermont

I would go with the Orvis Access. I have heard great things from people that have fished them a lot. Both are the same price, but personally I believe that Orvis makes a nicer rod. Orvis has always been good to me so I would recommend them. A lot of people fish the beulah rods, but I like the feel of the Access better.

Yup: bought one; I got the 8wt switch rod, and matched it with the 8wt switch line wich is a 450gr head. this feels a bit too much fro the rod. I'm going to try a line around 400-390 area and see how if feels. The rod has a hard time picking up the 450gr head for a single spey, snap T's and spirals work well, but the tip to mid section seems to be over loaded when trying the singel. Or I could be doing somthing wrong

I have an 8 wt switch and I have matched it with a 400 grain head at it works really well. Hope you find the perfect match.

Hey there Patrick what line are you using, right now I have the Orvis 8wt switch line; and it feels a bit to much for the rod. I wish that Orvis would have come up with a grain window for their rods like Echo, it makes it easier to select the right line with out exparements that cost 70+$ each.

Thats beulah's tonic line and it says how many grains and what rod it will work with. I have a rio line on mine, but it might be worth going to the orvis store explain whats happened with it feeling too heavy and ask if you can try casting a 400 grain line. Worst thing that could happen is they don't let you cast the line before you want to but it. People at orvis are always very nice and understanding about that. If not then go to a different fly shop and see if they will let you cast a 400 on you rod to see how it feels. Hope this helps.

I had bought 6/7 400gr Elixer switch line from beulha the other week, and had the chance to give it a try the other moring before I set off for the the Gulf coast for two weeks. Man..... what an improvement. When I first started trying out this whole switch thing with much dificulty and fustration I was almost to the point in thinking that this (switch thing) is B.S. . This line change has turned night into day, what a diferance 50grs and 7ft off the head realy make. Once I got use to the line and started finding the sweet spots I was hitting 80ft cast both spey and over head, single hand and double. I was using a 10ft intermed. polly leader with about 4ft of tippet casting 1/0 seducers to smallmouth, no fish but getting this dialed in has me very happy. The Susquehanna river and a switch rod are as PB&J, I was amazed with the amount of water that I could cover stripping and drifting.....good stuff and thaks for the info Patrick
