I think I might cry! I would love to. Unfortunately, I am leaving on Saturday for Wyoming. I will be out there for a week, then I will be driving to Salt Lake City. I will be headed back here on the 20th. I may bring a rod in hopes of getting a little fishing in, but time is pretty tight.
Thanks anyway, Jeremy. Hope you get into some!

anyway - have a good trip - we will get into the albies next fall - and when you get back to NY we will start to plan some steelie trips - i miss fly fishing with you and whippa - we all had such a blast and lots of laughs in rhode island this spring - all the salt water guys here in maine keep askiing about you guys ---- i saw pistol pete on the the vineyard --- he said, "tell those guys from new york to go #%&* off" - |

Howdy!
Hey guys, I hate to say it but I am actually more excited for the albie fishing than salmon river. I can hear my line just flat out whipping outa the striping basket already. Seriously though if one of us hooks up it will be great. Putting off all my egg fly tying and switching over to bunny flies tied on $4 hooks I think I have the bug, only 4 more days to go!!! Tight lines

If you can put off your trip to the salmon river until the crowds are gone and the steelies are in the river, you will have a much better time.
The salmon run, as wild as it may be, is just the warm-up for the main event (steelhead ).
I stopped going there about 20 years ago b/c I couldn't deal with the lifting, lining and snagging. In those days I was drifting spawn sacks with spinning gear for salmon and steelies. It just seemed like 9 out of 10 "fisherman" would be using a 1/0 egg hook with a tiny plastic crazy egg or the like. Throughout the drift they would constantly lift their rod (hence the term lifting) this would usually be accompanied with " hadda bite....missed him" or "fish on" with the fish usually foul hooked.
Last year during steelhead season I was inspired by this board to give flyfishing for steel and salmon a try. I'm a long time fly fisherman but always for stream trout.
I've had a few very enjoyable trips to the salmon river so far this year, and actually landed my first fly caught king a couple of weeks ago.
For me this is (I hope) a "tune up" for Steelhead season.
I've heard a few reports of some guys getting steelhead, and I saw one steelie and a coupla nice browns landed at Altmar a few weeks ago.
Last week, Wed, and Thursday I concentrated on the lower part of the river (DSR). I had a ball on thursday the weather was wild w/ sheets of rain sweeping up the river and gusts of wind that were 30-50 mph. It stayed windy all day, but in the afternoon there were breaks in the clouds with some sun breaking thru. The bonus................there were very few fishermen that stuck it out, and I had some beautiful stretches of the river to myself. In the afternoon I hit a stretch that had some fresh agressive kings, and I had 5 hook-ups with one nice female landed.
From what I've been hearing, this has been a banner year for salmon. I hope we'll be able to say the same later on about steelies. |

| Lifters are a problem wherever there are salmon. We have them up here too esecially for hard to catch red salmon. Some people are lazy and just won't put in the work it takes to catch a skittish salmon. Luckily kodiak doesn't have near the pressure the salmon river has so they can be avoided easily up here. |
