Fly Fishing

I will be making my annual ski/fish trip out west and this year it is steamboat and the Yampa. How is the fishing in early march? What section should I fish? Also any help with fly patterns for that time of year would be great.

Midges (red, black, cream, grey),baetis, bwo's, Rs2s, scuds, all tiny stuff in the tailwater. Don't be afraid to throw some streamers at them either. Sculpins and woolly buggers. I am not 100 percent but the road to the tailwater (stagecoach) might be closed because of snow. I like to fish below stagecoach but will venture into town time to time. If you have never fished the yampa the tailwater is a must see. Skinny water with big rainbows. Shoot me a pm before you go and I can give you a update. I get up there a few times a month.

I have never fly fished the yampa river, although .. through the years, I have seen some amazing fish tales come in from people who have. If you use the fliesandfins search bar (top right of this site) to search on "yampa" you will be presented with all of the articles that relate to the yampa river .. and, within those fishtales you will be able to find some great information. Additionally, Flies And Fins West www.fliesandfinswest.com has some good information about west coast fly fishing and the yampa river. So, between Joey, related fishtales, flies and fins west and other members who might resond to your post .. I am sure you will be able to find some quality information. Good Luck! PS. Maybe not helpful at all, but I went out to Wyoming in February of last year and although it was winter .. I did really well. Super small midges under indicator setups .. Zebra midges, WD40's and RS2's were the name of the game. It was amazing in the sense that if the fly was bigger than let's say a size 20 .. the hook ups dropped off significantly. So, if the yampa fishes anything like the western rivers that I was fishing last winter .. think small. Good luck.

I am also heading to Steamboat skiing in early March. I won't have access to a car and was wondering if there are decent places to fish the Yampa that are walking distance from town. I know the river runs right through town and hopefully i don't have to go far.

I was also planning on fishing nymphs, streamers, and wooly buggers. Does that sound like a good plan? Of course I'll stop in the local fly shop and see what they recommend.

Any advice would be appreciated.
