Hey all! I will be on holiday in Costa Rica at the end of Aug. We will charter a day off shore or in-shore, but I want to do a lot of my own casting around. Anyone do any fishing from the beach/wading into the surf. Waves are pretty mild where we will be on the North Pacific Coast. Any suggestions on patterns? Any idea as to what I might target or hook up with incidentally. have seen small nurse sharks at this location.... could be fun. Seen lots of small stuff right in the surf too - angel fish, etc. There's a dead reef near by as well - did not see a lot there. I would just really like to nail a rooster or even some jacks. Anyone with any information, please advise.
Thanks.

Jake

I was there in January of 2006 and I had a blast fishing the surf. I found it too windy to fly fish most days and the tides were the key. Slack and ebb tides were the best. We caught needle fish, pacific hawkfish (small cod), small tuna and we saw rays. I also caught a puffer fish and got pounded by the surf a few times where it took a scamble to get my bearings. We went one morning inshore and I was lucky enough to catch nice rooster. We used a 3 poud shipjack tuna for live bait and that seemed to work. We were just north of Tamarindo.

Good luck! PM me if you want more details.

Thanks for the response. I am wondering what patterns you used in the surf. Wind can be an issue, but heavier duty fly rods and line can deal with that. What kind of tuna were you getting in the surf? Anything big? See any jacks or was it mainly small stuff? Thanks again for the info. nice rooster by the way.

We used the brightest flys we had in greens and blues with lots of flash. We did see some jacks but did not hook any. The area we were in had too much rock out crops and not much for beaches. When we had bait close to shore that is when we saw the most fish they pushed them up into the shallows. Again it was good surfing weather wne we were there. Here are a few pics.
