Hey .. I was just in baja mexico a few months ago .. did some fishing from shore .. I know its not "Cancun" but relative .. Also, now that I am typing this .. I just remembered .. I have infact fly fished Cancun! I forgot .. so, here is the intel I can give you .. again .. I am NOT claiming to be an expert on mexico fly fishing or know more than the next guy or even care about any of that nonsense .. all i am doing is giving you what I know .. and maybe it will help ..

Bottom Line: when fly fishing in baja from shore it was ultimtely very similar to what i did in mexico ... get white clousers or deceivers .. start with the basics so you can find some fish .. most fish from shore down there will take a simple white clouser or deceiver pattern maybe with a little chartreuse thrown in for good measure .. tie up some various sizes .. Get yourself an intermediate fly line and a 9 weight ... no need for specialized tappered leader .. just get a spool of 20 pound flurocarbon .. tie on 9 feet of leader from fly line right to the fly and go! ..

now - when i was in cancun .. i recall that there were some ancient ruins and i rode from the "city" on a moped to the "ruins" .. i stopped at any spots along the road that looked good .. and made some casts .. i hooked some monster fish .. 2 infact .. unfortunately i think they were giant barracuda cuz they broke me off clean in seconds flat ... so, BRING SOME WIRE ... i then went out for barracuda on a ponga .. i traded some local fisherman 4 or 5 Miller tallies for a few hours out on their ponga .. they didn't speak much english but it didn't much matter .. we caught some barracuda if i remember correctly ... i did the same in baja .. there are yellowtail you could get and all sorts of other things like jacks etc.... and with the cloousers i caught all sorts of fish and i don't even know what there names were ... certainly though, if you find the right spot .. there will be fish .... this i know for sure ... ok .. hope it helps .. maybe others can help you with more specifics ... but as far as cancun goes .. make your way out to those ancient ruins and fish along the road that brings your there from downtown cancun .. the CLOSER you get to the ruins the fishing gets better .. so maybe go to the ruins and fish back ... good luck man.

8 wt will be great .. sounds like your in the game .. focus on the clousers for seaking out fish and blind casting .. merkins and shrimp if your sight fishing on the flats .. but for blind casting clousers and don't be afraid to make them on the bigger side .. her is what you could get for wire .. simple ..
