dude, .. trout .. you not only got trout out your back door .. but, access to some great steelhead fly fishing .. and the spring run is just firing up .. you have tons of creeks right around the rochester vacinity (because the creeks are so small .. i would rather not mention them publicicly .. but, basically go to any fly shop and buy a couple flies and you will be in the game, quick) .. also .. you are only 2 hours from salmon river in pulaski, ny .. there is no shortage of information on that river and it is a 15 mile long beautiful river with classic steelhead water, big fish and good runs of fish ... also, for steelhead and brown trout .. you are not far from oswego county ... so, the good news is you have steelhead and lake run brown trout right out your door .. go get 'em ..
ps.. as far as "regular trout" .. starting up in april/may'ish .. your within reasonable driving distance of the delaware river ... arguably some of the best dry fly fishing for wild big brown and rainbow trout in the united states ... absolutely ridiculous amounts of insect life and hatches ... also, in the adirondacks .. many other trout streams ... good luck .. if you search and browse this site and you will find some little nuggets of information within the fishtales .. that may help you .. good luck.

Yeah, if you wanna make a drive, I would say come here to the adirondacks, and the ausable river . . . there is a pretty long stretch of C&R fishing and a pretty gnarly "2 fly" contest in the spring. There are also some local ponds that produce a lot of native brook trout in the 18-22 inch range, especially at ice out.
